Self-Evaluation – Leveraging a BSHA Degree in Healthcare

Applying a BSHA Degree to Healthcare Career Success

Enrolling in a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration program was a great decision, as it started to transform my perspective in healthcare and prepared me for the challenges prevalent in the dynamic healthcare setting. Reflecting on the coursework completed, two courses rise as being the most influential on my future professional career: HCS/456: Risk Management and HCS/499: Health Care Strategy Capstone.

Career Growth in Courses and Skills

Risk management in healthcare is one of the most important concepts I acquired from HCS/456, building within me the ability to recognize, evaluate, and control risks in healthcare organizations. These skills will be vital in my new responsibilities, with patient security and the survival of the organization as top priorities. Additionally, while taking the Health Care Strategy Capstone (HCS/499), I was exposed to practical ways of making strategic plans and solving problems. The course further developed my ability to make decisions and lead, equipping me for a career in healthcare management.

Career Skills to Highlight

On my résumé and in cover letters, I will detail the skills I have acquired, including risk management, strategic planning, and leadership. I will focus on my experience in identifying and quantifying operational risk areas, formulating risk mitigation plans, and leading teams to execute strategies to enhance operational efficiencies. When it comes to interviews, I will confidently discuss how these skills allowed me to lead projects under my Capstone course, showing that I am prepared to contribute to healthcare organizations.

Strengths for Future Development

Even though I believe I am well-prepared to handle issues in risk management and strategy, I need more development in financial management. Healthcare is increasingly becoming a place driven by financial metrics, and a proper understanding of healthcare finance will equip me to lead cost-effective organizations while delivering quality patient care (Holcomb et al., 2021; Sadeghi et al., 2013).

Self-Discovery and Career Goals

During the program, I also learned that I favor work that involves leadership and problem-solving. Therefore, when seeking jobs after completing my degree, I will use this insight to help me determine opportunities that will utilize my skills in management and strategy. My career goals have evolved to include not only working within the healthcare industry but also standing out as an individual who impacts decision-making and change within healthcare systems.

Course Skills Gained Future Application
HCS/456: Risk Management Risk identification and mitigation Ensuring patient safety and compliance
HCS/499: Health Care Strategy Strategic planning, leadership Leading healthcare organizations
Healthcare Finance (planned) Financial management Managing cost-effective care
