Selecting a Research Topic – Divorce and Separation

The topic selected for the research project is divorce and separation. Divorce and separation were chosen as the ideal topics because they have become common in society today. Statistics show that in 2021 alone, more than 600,000 divorces occurred in the U.S. (Çaksen, 2022). This statistic indicates that divorce is a serious social issue based on the number of occurrences. What makes divorce a severe issue is its impact on individuals, children, and society (Auersperg et al., 2019). Sociologists are interested in child development because a society with morally upright people comprises children with excellent growth. Divorce emotionally affects the divorcing individuals because it means the failure of a relationship. The divorce processes that involve court cases can also be intense, thus causing stress and mentally destabilizing the individuals involved. The main reason for research in this area of divorce is because, apart from the fact that it is rampant, the people who suffer the most during divorce are the children (Schaan et al., 2019). The growth and development of the children is dependent on the two parents. Therefore, a study on divorce would be very important because it would help give more information on how this phenomenon affects children (Çaksen, 2022).

The main area of the research will focus on understanding the impacts of divorce on children’s mental health. Separation of the two parents can lead to pain and destabilize the children. At the same time, since divorce can sometimes involve arguments and disagreements between the parents, the dispute can cause severe emotional issues that lead to mental challenges in children. At the same time, the separation process can knock off the balance of how the children live mainly because they may have to live with only one of the parents.(Auersperg et al. 2019).

Explain why this topic is of interest to you (Be careful not to use first-person as this is a formal paper).
Explain the topic and describe the potential research areas.
Choosing your topic:

The best way to choose a topic is to research the topic before you choose it.

One of the biggest challenges in finding articles for your topic is that your topic may not have much in the way of research. The remedy for this is when you first have an idea for a topic, to go to the online library and do a quick search on current research for your topic. If you can find several articles on your topic, you’re good to go. If you can’t, it would be good to modify your topic a bit or even change it until you find one that will generate the needed articles for your reviews.

When searching for articles scan first and read later:

You can speed up your article search if you focus mainly on three things.

Looking at the journal name may provide some insight into access to other articles. Many journals are specific to a certain discipline or area of study.
Review the abstract The first abstract will provide valuable information on what the article may hold. Keep in mind that the abstract does not contain all the information you need. It is imperative to read the entire article if you choose it as one of the articles you will use.
Identifying the article as research. There are many non-research articles in scholarly journal articles but they may not work for your paper.
