Searching the Database

Searching the Database

Nurses are essential personnel in the healthcare sector. They are in direct contact with patients more than other healthcare workers. Therefore, they ensure patient safety and recovery. Healthcare institutions should be adequately staffed to facilitate the smooth operation of nursing tasks. Nursing shortage negatively impacts the health care system. It leads to burnout and stress among the nursing staff (Saikia, 2018). As a result, this lowers the quality of service delivery. It can lead to an increase in medication errors, prolonged hospital stays, and mortalities (Brücher & Deufert, 2019). Extended hospital stays have a financial impact on the patient. Therefore, the clinical issue of the nursing shortage should be addressed adequately.

More than one hundred thousand articles were displayed when I searched the database. I then customized the timeframe to begin from the year 2018. The number of articles decreased to twenty thousand. The Boolean operators helped to exclude systemically reviewed articles. The operators that proved helpful are AND, OR, and NOT. The utility of NOT helped to achieve specificity and relevance. This reduced the number of articles to less than one hundred.

Different strategies will be used to improve the vigor and effectiveness of a database search on my PICOT question. The first strategy uses vital elements to search (Ho et al., 2016). A few components of the question will be explored. This will include the population, intervention, and comparison group. Broader search terms will be incorporated if fewer articles are displayed. The second strategy will be customizing the timeframe of the desired report (Ho et al., 2016). The timescale will be set to articles published since 2018. The third strategy will be using Boolean operators. Boolean operators like NOT will be used to facilitate exclusion and achieve relevance. Specifically, it will be used to exclude articles with different interventions.

Discussion: Searching Databases
When you purchase a new car, you first decide what is important to you. If mileage and dependability are the critical factors, you will search for data focused more on these factors and less on color options and sound systems.

Searching the Database

Searching the Database

The same holds when searching for research evidence to guide your clinical inquiry and professional decisions. Developing a formula for an answerable, researchable question that addresses your need will make the search process more effective. One such formula is the PICO(T) format.

In this Discussion, you will transform a clinical inquiry into a searchable question in PICO(T) format so you can search the electronic databases more effectively and efficiently. You will share this PICO(T) question and examine strategies to increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on your PICO(T) question.

To Prepare:

Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry.
Review the materials offering guidance on using databases, performing keyword searches, and developing PICO(T) questions provided in the Resources.
Based on the clinical issue of interest and using keywords related to the clinical point of interest, search at least two databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles about your clinical topic of interest. It would be best not to use systematic reviews for this assignment; select original research articles.
Review the Resources for guidance and develop a PICO(T) question for further study. It is suggested that an Intervention-type PICOT question be created as these seem to work best for this course.
By Day 3 of Week 4
Post a brief description of your clinical issue of interest. This clinical issue will remain the same for the entire course and will be the basis for developing your PICOT question. Describe your search results regarding the number of articles returned on original research and how this changed as you added search terms using your Boolean operators. Finally, explain strategies to increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on your PICO(T) question. Be specific and provide examples.
