Search Strategy-Nurse Turnover Rate Post-Pandemic and the Effect on Patient Care

Research is critical for all healthcare professionals. It enables all healthcare professionals to offer quality. All nurses must know how to access and retrieve research articles that can be used in evidence-based practice. Nurses must learn how to incorporate research evidence into routine. This will improve patient care and clinical decision-making. It also enhances the knowledge of healthcare workers, especially nurses.

Clinical Question

The topic that my team will handle is nurse turnover rates post-pandemic and the effect that this will have on patient care. This topic will highlight the impact that COVID-19 has had on nurses regarding burnout, mental health, and job satisfaction. This, in turn, affects the turnover rates. A high turnover rate of nurses negatively affects patient care (Dewanto & Wardhani, 2018). Nurse turnover leads to patients being dissatisfied with care since they believe the new nurses are incompetent to offer care. The high turnover rates result in disruptions in team cohesion and professional staff, which negatively affects patient care (Dewanto & Wardhani, 2018). In recent times, I have articles on how many nurses are leaving their jobs due to the mental health and fatigue linked to the pandemic. There has always been a high turnover rate, but the pandemic has worsened the situation. The objective of my team will be to investigate the rate of nurse turnover post-pandemic and how this will affect patient care.

PICOT will be used to develop the clinical question and help in this research. The PICOT question for this essay is, “How the nurses turnover rate post-pandemic has impacted  patient care?” The population under interest is nurses. The indicator is the turnover rates. There is no comparison for this particular study. The outcome is patient care, while the time is post-pandemic. This RUA paper aims to evaluate the research strategies that will be used to identify two articles related to the selected PICOT question.

Levels of Evidence

To conduct credible research, it is critical to locate information supported by evidence. This group will use the mixed methods to conduct the investigation. This will involve utilizing qualitative and quantitative research methods. The quantitative research methods will be used to determine the turnover rates, while the qualitative results will determine the impacts on patient care search satisfaction and healthcare outcomes. Houser (2018) notes that quantitative research involves the collection and analysis of numerical data. These methods can be used to find patterns, test causal relationships, and make predictions. Qualitative research methods analyze non-numerical data to understand phenomena (Houser, 2018). It can be used to understand a problem.

By utilizing these methods, we can understand the correlation between nurse turnover and its impact on patient care. This will be an exploratory study since the methods selected will require my team to obtain data that will prove that nurse turnover rates impact patient care. The PICOT question will aim to answer this. Two scholarly articles will be located to answer this PICOT question.

Search Results

While researching the effect of nurse turnover rate post-pandemic on patient care, the terms used that were connected to my PICOT question included “nurses turnover rates,” “nurses turnover rate due to Covid-19, ” “effects of nurse turnover rates,” and “nurses turnover and patient outcomes.” I used Google Scholar, CINAHL, and Chamberlain University databases to locate credible articles. The database search revealed articles, links, and PDF documents. CINAHL had 12 results, a CU database with 15 effects, and Google Scholar had over 500,000 results. There was a huge range in the search results, so I refined the search process by limiting publication dates to within five years. The results of the search process were better, but Google Scholar still had over 15,000 articles. I decided to look at the articles closer and realized that not all pieces were scholarly and peer-reviewed. Some of the articles I excluded were from non-profit organizations, governmental websites, for-profit organizations, and institutions of higher learning. The CINAHL database has filter engines, which enabled us to narrow the search engine. It also indicated the authors, their credentials, and publishing organizations. I decided to choose two articles from the CINAHL database.

The first article was titled “How to reposition the nursing profession for a post-covid age.” Catton and Iro (2021) note that there will be a shortage of nurses due to mass traumatization, resulting in a nursing workforce of up to 10% leaving their jobs. This will negatively impact patient care since nurses are the first line of healthcare workers. The second article was titled “Identifying the predictors of turnover intention based on psychosocial factors of nurses during the COVID-19 outbreak.” Mirzaei et al. (2021) stated that since nurses are frontline workers, they are at risk of developing COVID-19, which can result in fear, panic, emotional burden, and job-related stress, which can result in high turnover rates

Conclusion

It is critical to develop PICOT questions to ensure that relevant information is retrieved for our team project. The PICOT question will help concentrate on how nurses turnover post-pandemic will impact patient care. The use of an approved database will lead to locating credible resources.
