Scholarly Sources vs. Popular Sources

Source Characteristics

There are different sources of information, including scholarly sources and popular sources. Scholarly sources or articles, also called academic journals, are those written by experts or academics and contribute to knowledge in a specific field; they usually include new theories, research, and reviews of current knowledge, among others. Characteristics of scholarly articles include: first, they must be peer-reviewed, meaning that other experts have reviewed them for validity and accuracy. Secondly, they must contain a list of references from where the information was obtained. Third, they also contain an abstract. An abstract is at the beginning of the article and essentially summarizes the concept behind the article. Fourth, scholarly articles must contain the author’s credentials.

On the other hand, popular sources or articles target the interests of the general public and include magazines and newspapers. Some characteristics of popular sources include being visually appealing, like in magazines where colorful images and different fonts are used almost on every page. Secondly, they contain a lot of advertisements. Third, the authors do not need to provide their credentials as a publishing company or freelancer staff writes them. Notably, experts can also participate in writing popular articles.

Similarities and Differences

Scholarly and popular articles are similar in that they contain reviewed information. Even though popular sources contain more general information, they have to be factual so that they do not mislead the public. Therefore, both sources publish verified information. Second, they are published by experts, and academics can take part in both scholarly and popular articles. Third, they are published by established institutions like universities or commercial publishers. The differences between these two sources include that scholarly articles contain references and a bibliography, while popular articles do not. Second, scholarly articles take a very formal approach with fewer colors and more graphs and charts, while popular articles take a different approach with many colors and images. Third, scholarly articles provide knowledge on academic matters; hence, they stick to one idea in the whole article, while popular articles can address multiple issues, like fashion, diet, and politics, all at once.

Articles

A popular article by Karen Weintraub in The New York Times and a scholarly article by Sarwar et al. (2021) address how trauma can have long-lasting effects on a person’s personality development. The articles are similar in that established organizations publish them. They also contain verified information, although the popular article requires more research for one to verify. Conversely, they differ in various ways, including their appearance. The scholarly article is very formal; it has one or two types of font in black. Contrariwise, the popular article has more relaxed fonts with different colors, images, and advertisements. Lastly, the scholarly article has a reference list and in-text citations, while the popular article has none.
