Role of Parents And Guardians As Advocates For Their Children
Parents and Guardian’s role as an advocate for their children is to ensure that all great opportunities and decisions are made for them. They are a vital link between home and school. And when they become involved in the life of the school, they make our schools better places to learn, grow and thrive. (Parents in Partnership, Ministry of Education, 2010). Parents or Guardians should be able to agree or disagree with specific situations for the child because children cannot think logically about life decisions. An example of advocating for your child would be whether or not your child needs further assistance, intervention, or exceptional classes.
As a special education advocate, teaching parents to become advocates for their children can be advised by presenting different safeguard books, reading the book if necessary to the parent, asking the parent to address any concerns that they may have regarding their child, and advising decision making to be the best of your knowledge. Safeguards are one way to assist a parent or Guardian with being an advocate. Another way would be addressing the IEP, presenting data, and following up on information that the IEP team has set for the child. If the parent has valid data and a great understanding of their child’s ability, they can agree or disagree with the child’s best interest.
