Role Of Family, Culture, And Other Environmental Factors In Development

Role Of Family, Culture, And Other Environmental Factors In Development

Cultures can shape children’s beliefs, values, morals, and understanding of themselves and their world. One primary way is Family culture; “every home and household practices & follows a certain culture (Bajoria, 2019).” This can influence how they learn and how well they do in school. For example, if they grow up in a family that does not care about their child’s grades or education, they are more likely to struggle in school. Values and morals are other cultural influences that can negatively and positively influence child development and classroom behavior. If a child sees negative behavior, such as yelling or hitting at home, they are more likely to reciprocate that behavior at some point in their school career. Outside culture, experiences also can shape a child’s growth and behavior. This article stated that “Educational institutions, especially school (since those are very impressionable years), plays a significant role in shaping a culture that a child will adopt for the rest of his or her life (Bajoria, 2019).” If a school shows high learning and behavior standards, the children can learn right from wrong at school regardless of what they see at home.

Parent involvement is essential to ensure growth and development in a child’s life. A teacher can increase a parent’s involvement and knowledge of why they need to be involved in their child’s learning process in multiple ways. One way is to hold regular meetings with the parents. This can be as simple as doing a phone call to talk about what their child has been doing and what they need to work on, or you can have the parents come in and show them what their child has been doing. Have strong communication with the families of the children. “Open communication is encouraged by using multiple channels to transmit necessary information (including the school website, email lists and traditional methods for those without reliable email access) (University, n.d.)” Making it easier on the parents will encourage the parents to be more involved. Another strategy is to build a relationship with these families. This could be extending a personal invite to parent events at the school and asking for parents’ input on what their child should learn. All the strategies could help the parents feel more comfortable.
