Risk Management II- Patient Safety Excellence Award

Risk Management II- Patient Safety Excellence Award

Patient safety remains a key priority in the healthcare system. Several strategies are used by various hospitals and other healthcare provision areas to enhance safety and ultimate care outcomes. The Patient Safety Excellence Awards recognize efforts by individual care provision centers to enhance the safety of patients. The Saline Memorial Hospital in Arkansas has been recognized for its efforts in enhancing patient safety.

Analysis of the Safety Report

The safety report of the Saline Memorial Hospital was excellent for the level of care provided to their patients. The patient experience report indicated that over 67% of all the patients gave a nine of ten rating regarding their personal experiences with the services offered in the hospital. Another 65% would recommend Saline Memorial Hospital as their primary point of care provision. The patient experience report was based on the methodology described by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey data. This survey tool was established by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services as a strategy to evaluate the quality of care provision in the healthcare system.

Patient Safety Ratings

A patient safety report details the quality of care provision in various care facilities. Patient safety ratings detail patients’ satisfaction with the operationalization of these care facilities as viewed by patients. The higher the ratings, the more satisfied the patients are with the services provided by the hospital. A patient’s rating would influence my choice of a hospital. Better ratings instill the client’s confidence in services provided by a hospital. Clients will prefer a better-rated hospital because they believe that they will receive quality services in these hospitals. The most critical indicators in a hospital are patient-provider ratios, types of services provided in the hospital, and types of specialty certifications available in the hospital.

Patient-provider Ratios

Patient-provider ratios are key in the maintenance of quality in care provisions. Better patient-to-provider ratios enable quality care provision by reducing the workload on the providers and increasing the contact time between the patients and their healthcare providers. The presence of specialty certifications in a hospital is also an important indicator in healthcare. Specialty certifications enhance the overall effectiveness of care provision by tapping into the skills and expertise of these specialties in care provision.

Psychiatric care often presents considerable complexities in psych management. Risk managers are tasked with maneuvering through these complexities and maintaining quality care provision in these care facilities. Safety indicators in psychiatric care include the presence of specialty certification, the percentage of certified healthcare professionals, and the use of electronic health records (Breyer et al., 2019). The presence and number of specialty certifications a key quality indicators in psychiatry. Specialties in psych management are psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. Better management is assured when these specialists are involved in the care provision of all patients presenting with mental illnesses. The presence of specialties as a clinical indicator in psych management can be measured by looking at the care outcomes in management. Specialty care is expected to optimize care provision.

The Percentage of Healthcare Professionals

The percentage of physicians and other healthcare professionals is also a key quality indicator. Physicians aid in the diagnosis and management of mental illnesses and accompanying disorders. Better quality of care is assured when physicians are actively involved in care management. This is because of their expertise in patient handling and management. Other important healthcare professionals include pharmacists and nurses. The presence of physicians as an indicator in psych management can be measured by looking at the effectiveness of care outcomes and the reduction of misdiagnosis and provider-related care errors.

Electronic Health Records

Electronic health records are also an important indicator in psychiatric management. Electronic medical records enhance the efficiency of care provision processes. Their integration into the healthcare system is necessary for improving the quality of care provision. Electronic health records as a clinical indicator can be measured by assessing the efficiency of the care provisions system. This includes establishing the number of patient readmissions, cost of treatment, and care outcomes (Janett & Yeracaris, 2020). All these indicators are necessary to enhance care provision processes and care optimization. Their combined use improves the quality of care and ensures patient and provider satisfaction in care processes.

In conclusion, patient safety remains a priority in healthcare provision. Various institutions have been recognized for their excellence in enhancing the safety of patients. In psychiatric management, the safety of the patients maintains the central position in the care process. Clinical indicators of safety and quality include the presence of specialty care and the percentage of physicians. These quality indicators in psychiatric management will ensure optimal care outcomes.

Risk Management II- Patient Safety Excellence Award

Risk Management II- Patient Safety Excellence Award

The “Patient Safety Excellence Award™ Recipients 2017” page lists hospitals that received the award. Click one of the hospitals, and you will be taken to that hospital’s Hospital Quality report.
Scroll down to review the hospital’s Safety Ratings and Hospital Quality Clinical Ratings.
Examine the information in the safety report from the point of view of a patient. State how patient safety ratings would influence your choice of hospital. Which, for you, are the most critical indicators? Give reasons citing indicators and results for those chosen indicators. Write your analysis on one page.

Now, think like a risk manager. List the safety indicators that pertain to the high-risk area you selected in Week 1. This will require some research. Chart audits are widely used, but the information in them varies. For example, checking for proper signatures on all forms and orders can be used universally, while daily recording of medication refrigeration temperature will only be used in some areas.

Select a minimum of three and a maximum of four indicators for measurement in your quality improvement program.

For each indicator, include the following information:

Indicator

Describe the indicator.

Rationale

Explain why this indicator is suitable for the high-risk area you have chosen.

Measurement

Describe and explain how you will measure this indicator.

Finally, explain how these indicators taken together cover all aspects of quality in the high-risk area.

Put together your analysis of patient safety ratings and your list of indicators in a Word document that includes an introduction and conclusion.
