Review – Children of Men Directed by Alfonso Cuaron

Review – Children of Men Directed by Alfonso Cuaron

Children of Men is a contemporary movie directed by Alfonso Cuaron and based on a novel written by P.D. James. The purpose of the movie is to criticize everything wrong that is happening in our world (Riesman). The context of the movie is Britain in 2027 as an authoritarian state that has been made weak by a mysterious global cataclysm that has taken away the fertility of the human race (Dalton). Britain is depicted as the remaining state that is a bit stale, hence attracting migrants fleeing war and the plague in their homelands only to end up being imprisoned and demonized in refugee camps (Dalton). It contains appealing backgrounds that have a deeper meaning and draw the attention of viewers. For instance, in one scene, there is a background of a ship that is freshly painted cutting through the fog, which contrasts with the decay and grime shown in the rest of the movie. The picture is also a painting in a museum illustrating a myth about the struggle to escape the darkness and move to a better tomorrow. The movie creates empathy by showing scenes that depict human suffering. For instance, in one scene towards the end of the movie, a newborn child is being carried through people fighting in a refugee camp. There are explosions and gunfire around, and people are rushing to find shelter. They then hear the cries of the newborn for the first time in 18 years and come out of hiding because they want to see the baby. They stretch their arms to touch the child despite the risk of being killed by the soldiers who had raided their camp. This movie will one day be considered a masterpiece because it will depict the world that people will be living in due to the rising trend of terrorism, war, pandemics, and epidemics across the world. The author of the movie will be considered a giant for providing an accurate picture of what the world will be like in a few years to come and being able to predict the things that will be happening at that time.
