Response – Importance of Global Perspectives in Nursing Practice
Hello Brittany
You’ve well-articulated the importance of global perspectives in nursing practice. I appreciate your focus on the need for evidence-based, patient-centered decisions and the role of global organizations like the WHO and the ICN in keeping nurses informed. Your mention of the six significant defects in healthcare quality identified by Berwick et al. (2018) serves as a vital reminder that these issues transcend local boundaries and require a unified, global approach to reform, ensuring that quality care is accessible to all, regardless of geographical location.
To build on your points, I want to stress the importance of cultural competence in international medical practice. Therefore, as nurses, knowing patients’ cultural antecedents, values, and customs is essential. Such an understanding becomes crucial when integrating extant evidence-based practices, some of which may require significant changes to fit the cultural setting (Červený et al., 2022). Incorporation of cultural competence in patient care also leads to better satisfaction and confidence of the patient with the health care system. This view is more consistent with your focus on healthcare quality, an international concern about the approach toward patients from different cultures.
Additionally, how will you be able to update yourself with the new findings and the latest policies or trends in the field of global health when you are progressing to practicum and beyond? Have you thought of ways to get at it, including a subscription to journals on global health, conferences, or fixing oneself for continuous education? Using alert services to notify one of the new publications or joining online groups or professional networks can be a way of not being overwhelmed by the information available. Participating in these activities will help you stay current and allow for professional development in conjunction with those of like-minded individuals.
Overall, the knowledge you have presented in your reflections supports a sound connection between global health concerns and professional nursing. Certainly, your dedication to involving yourself in the process of updating knowledge, presenting plans, and advocating for policy changes will positively affect the health of your patients and the whole healthcare system. By achieving your contemplated knowledge and abilities, you will create an objective to fully participate in enhancing global health and providing higher-quality, patient-centered care.

Response – Importance of Global Perspectives in Nursing Practice
This week’s article, “Crossing the Global Healthcare Quality Chasm,” explains that quality healthcare is not just a local issue but affects people worldwide. According to Berwick et al., healthcare quality has six significant defects: safety, effectiveness, patient-centeredness, timeliness, efficacy, and equality. Change is needed on a global level. Making informed decisions in nursing practice and patient outcomes worldwide requires evidence-based and patient-centered decisions (Berwick et al.,2018). When making decisions for change, the nurse must be aware of legal, financial, environmental, cultural, and social factors affecting the population(Alshawish & Benbenishty, 2023). The nurse must also be well informed about global health issues by closely following organizations like the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control for updates. Joining the International Council of Nurses (ICN) can also keep the nurses informed of global health issues, and they can lobby for change in healthcare. By joining ICN, the nurse can engage in policy advocacy to influence change in nursing practice and patient outcomes by using evidence-based practice to implement change.
The knowledge I gained in NR506 can be applied to my upcoming practicum experience and future practice as an advanced nurse practitioner. I have gained awareness of the scope of practice regulated by the state where I practice. I am also aware of the legal and ethical consequences of not practicing within my scope of practice, its effects on the patient, and the practice in which I complete my practicum. I will stay current on the latest research and policies to advocate for the best practice for my patient’s health and outcomes. Policy advocacy is beneficial in strengthing patient care and outcomes(Chiu et al.,2021). I will evaluate the policies I practice to determine whether policy change is necessary to ensure quality patient care.
