Response – Immigration as a Highly Debated and Politicized Topic

Response to the Second Student

Hello,

This is a great post; your analysis of immigration as a highly debated and politicized topic is accurate. The multifaceted nature of the immigration issue necessitates comprehensive legislation to address it effectively. In the context of healthcare, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, immigration policies play a significant role (Ortega et al., 2020). You correctly highlighted the Trump administration’s use of Title 42, which allowed the return of immigrants to Mexico during the pandemic. It is worth noting that the Biden administration has allowed this provision to expire after the COVID crisis subsided (Ortega et al., 2020). Further, your emphasis on streamlining the immigration process and engaging in discussions with Congress is commendable. Addressing the status of individuals brought to the country as children and providing them access to healthcare and other essential rights is an important step toward fairness and inclusivity (Hacker et al., 2019). In these discussions with Congress, it is essential to consider the human aspect of immigration and the well-being of individuals affected by the system. Hacker et al. (2019) add that balancing national security concerns with compassion and recognizing immigrants’ contributions to society can lead to more equitable policies.

Question

The most debated and hotly contested policy that has impacted all administrations in my lifetime is immigration. Even the word to describe immigration, whether undocumented or illegal, has been politicized (Alamillo et al., 2019). There are many facets to the immigration issue, and each one needs to be discussed individually to develop comprehensive legislation to deal with immigration reform (Hollifield, 2018). The focus of this discussion will be healthcare, particularly on the pandemic.

Immigration as a Highly Debated and Politicized Topic

The Covid pandemic started in 2019 during the Trump administration. The administration utilized the pandemic to institute the provision of Public Health law known as Title 42. Title 42 allowed the Trump administration to return immigrants to Mexico. The Biden Administration has permitted this law to sunset after lifting the COVID crisis on the first of this year (Long, 2023).

There needs to be a discussion concerning immigration and streamlining the process of entering this country. Congress has not acted on immigration in almost forty years (Hollifield, 2018). I would make this the focus of many discussions with Congress as too many here are denied status when they were brought here as a child; without status, many of the things Americans take for granted are available to these individuals, with one being access to healthcare during the pandemic.
