This shift parallels Carl Rogers’ later emphasis on the importance of a nurturing environment for personal growth. Rogers argued that for individuals to achieve self-actualization, they must be in an environment that offers genuineness, acceptance, and empathy. Both theorists recognized the profound influence of external factors on psychological development. Still, while Freud focused on the unconscious and its conflicts, Rogers emphasized the conscious experience and the individual’s capacity for self-directed growth (Mcleod, 2024).
