Response – Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology
Hello Julianna,
Thank you for the informative and comprehensive post on Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology. Adler posits the social aspect and the inferiority complex, which is deviant from Freud’s view that this does not carry the biological elements. According to Freudian theory, it is argued that a man and woman’s sexual and aggressive drives make them act as they do; however, according to Tarzian et al. (2023), Adler’s narration shows that individuals act the way they do due to an inferiority complex. This change draws attention to the social context of personality rather than solely innate traits, such as genes, as the cause of personality development.
Notably, the fact that Adler altered Freud’s techniques, like dream interpretation, sets him apart at this level. Freud applied dream analysis to study latent wishfulness and desire, whereas Adler utilized it to examine the position of unconscious goals, emphasizing the person’s relationship with society. This reorientation has remained a permanent fixture in psychology, with its sustained relevance being demonstrated in social work, where Adler’s visions on individual differences and social environment remain germane in therapeutic interventions.
