Resources Available for Vulnerable Population

Community healthcare services are a branch of public health that focuses on people and the population’s role in determining their own and other people’s health. Community health services entail developing and distributing public resources aimed at improving the health of the community’s population. These resources aid in the study of medical and clinical sciences, which are concerned with the protection and approaches to improving the health of entire population groups and the community. As a nurse working and living in Texas, I know that the NET (North East Texas), a public health center for healthy living, is one of the recognized public resources in Texas. The primary goal of NET is to aid in illness prevention, health promotion, and community protection (Roberts, 2018).

NET services include cheaper testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STI), emergency and disaster preparedness surveillance, providing low-cost immunizations, assisting in monitoring essential health data, and environmental healthcare services. This public resource also helps in establishing free preventive screening, educating the public on diabetes illness, substance use, and abuse, and assisting with smoking cessation (Bolin et al., 2015).

Other services NET provides include a regional laboratory that assists with environmental, analytical, and medical testing procedures. NET provides vital data such as Tyler residents’ birth and death certificates. NET also offers cancer screening services, healthy living classes, exercise sessions, health screening, and assistance with health insurance enrollment. NET’s environmental health services include tasks associated with establishing food and sanitation, investigating public health complaints, and educating the public about the mechanism of creating a safe environment. NET also administers an immunization and tuberculosis control program through vaccination and enrollment in immunization registries. There is also TB testing and the monitoring of TB cases. WIC (women, infants, and children) also benefit from NET services. NET provides nutrition evaluation, counseling, and breastfeeding health education (Bolin et al., 2015).

Funding and Qualification

As a government-funded public service program, NET provides its services free of charge to all Texans. The NET’s sole focus is on individuals at risk of public health issues, and this is done without regard for age or ethnic origin. NET (North East Texas) Public Health Center for Healthy Living employees work as public health professionals to help prevent individuals from becoming ill or injured. Individuals targeted by the immunization program are at risk of contracting diseases such as measles, diphtheria, pertussis, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox. These populations do not have safe drinking water and are constantly consuming unsafe foods from restaurants and purchasing dangerous foods. The people practice unsafe health practices, exposing them to water and foodborne illnesses. As a result, regardless of gender, age, or ethnic origin, NET has established initiatives such as safe food, clean water, vaccination, and other current immunization programs to aid in community health improvement (Roberts, 2018).
