Research Designs in the CDS Dissertation Guide
Research design refers to the overall strategy that a researcher uses to integrate diverse aspects of the study coherently and logically to effectively address the identified problem. The dissertation guide outlines research designs that can be applied in human research. An applied research design presented therein that can be appropriate to the proposed study is phenomenology.
Phenomenology is a type of qualitative design that focuses on obtaining the lived experiences of the research participants (Alhazmi & Kaufmann, 2022). By targeting a population group or individuals with commonality in their lived experiences or a personal phenomenon, this design enables the researchers to identify common themes and insights into how the people understand the phenomenon under scrutiny. This study design is descriptive and can allow the researcher to accurately obtain information on the studied topic (Bonyadi, 2023). It also requires the researcher to put aside their biases or preconceived opinions on the subject under study and obtain, reflect, and analyze participant reports on the topic.
This design maintains appropriateness for the proposed plan. Using this approach, the research will be able to obtain lived experiences, perceptions, and insights of persons from ethnic minority groups regarding mental health. By approaching the study without any preconceived thought on the topic, the research may be able to identify factors within the population that interplay in poor access to mental healthcare, as well as population-specific factors that may be involved in their poor perception of mental healthcare. The design may also help unearth potential interpersonal and intrapersonal factors that impede mental healthcare seeking, thereby lowering access to mental healthcare. For these reasons, this design is appropriate for the proposed research study.
