Step 2: Summary of Analysis

My approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research is simple. My first step is to identify the research I would analyze. For this, I used keywords from my topic of interest: ‘ mental health nurse practitioner in practice.’ The second step after developing my keywords and using the topic of interest as a search phrase was to identify the databases I wanted to do the peer-review research search. I first used the school library to identify high-rated databases that could provide relevant peer-reviewed research articles from a search. I wanted to get refined results as much as possible. To follow this, I used Boolean operators and database search filter tools to refine the search results. After identifying and selecting the articles with topics and abstracts relevant to my topic of interest, the next step was to analyze the articles to locate the most relevant ones. To do this, I assessed the article’s credibility by reviewing the year it was published, the author’s interests and expertise in the topic, the methodology of the research, and the methods of data analysis utilized in the research. I also attempted to read the whole article as well compare the article’s findings to what is presented in related study findings.

The two strategies I would use and found to be effective in finding peer-reviewed research are the use of database-provided search tools and the use of the search topic as a search phrase. The database search tools that I found most helpful were filters, which helped me restrict the search results based on a range of when the articles were published. Other filters included the ability to select and differentiate search results based on paper types such as metanalyses, books, abstracts, full articles, and randomized controlled trials. Additionally, the use of my selected topic as a search phrase and developing keywords from the topic of interest helped return relevant search results.

There are a number of resources that can help find peer-reviewed research. However, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) library is a resource I intend to use to find peer-reviewed research. From a personal perspective, the NIH library is resourceful and can support the search and analysis of peer-reviewed research as it supports access to interdisciplinary research. The NIH Library is a gateway to multiple databases such as PubMed, CINAHL Plus, Cochrane Library, and UpToDate, among others. These databases further provide access to nursing-specific research articles that are peer-reviewed and updated. The NIH library also makes it possible to access full articles for free as well as other advanced search tools that help filter and refine research. Most importantly, it is possible to link up with other like-minded professionals from various medical and health fields, thus enabling multidisciplinary research.
