Reflective Journal – The Role of Technology in Improving Healthcare
This proved to be another productive week. I had a discussion with my preceptor about the role of technology in improving healthcare. This comes after we had a productive discussion the previous week about the population health concerns. We discussed how technological inventions in the field of medicine have led to better health outcomes and increased life expectancies globally. Currently, technology in healthcare is used for health records, service delivery, diagnosis, and treatment of various illnesses. This technology includes X-rays, MRI, CT scans, radiotherapy, ultrasound, information technology, electronic health records, telemedicine, and genome sequencing, among others.
I learned that Information Technology (IT) has had a great impact on healthcare, especially in the management of the Covid 19 pandemic. It plays a crucial role in the storage and access of medical information and data. I learned that healthcare providers can now retrieve the patients’ data from anywhere. Technology has also led to easy delivery of services, especially in this period of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as minimizing the spread of the disease.
It is obvious that technology has led to the revolutionization of healthcare practice as it has become an integral part of it. Healthcare technology has significantly improved operational effectiveness with respect to the standard practice of medicine. I learned that diagnostic tools used in the current practice of medicine have led to accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of patients, for instance, the use of chemotherapy and radiotherapy in cancer treatment. As a nurse, I have learned that technology has led to the attainment of good health, improving the quality of life through better health outcomes.
