Reflective Journal – Health Policies
In my meeting with my preceptor this week, we had a very productive discussion on the next topic: health policies. Healthcare facilities have set policies to ensure the best possible care is availed to patients. Health policies are a set of principles that dictate care delivery and access. They are plans or actions undertaken with the aim of achieving specific healthcare goals in a society. It outlines the society’s vision for the future, priorities, and roles to be played by different groups. The health care policy can be at a state or national level. It is implemented in the clinical or hospital environment. Healthcare policy directs healthcare professionals to the kind of outcomes expected in their services. It clarifies the policies and expectations of the different groups: nurses, administrators, and doctors. There are various categories of health policy, including global health, public health, pharmaceuticals, mental health, health equity, financing, health care services, and insurance. Nurses have a significant role in impacting the health policy of a hospital, state, or nation. Nurses are responsible for implementing health policy and influencing healthcare organizations and systems with the aim of providing better care to patients. They are the frontline caregivers to patients as they spend more time interacting with patients- and hence translate health procedures and policies to patients. In a hospital setting, health policies are aimed at protecting both the patient and the service providers. Health policies ensure that each patient receives the best services from healthcare professionals. It ensures good communication with patients, especially about procedures, consents, and risks. Healthcare facilities have policies that the workers should follow within the premises. They include communication policies, procedure policies, emergency policies, and honesty policies. Healthcare policies at different levels are formulated by hospital management, ANA, and the World Health Organization (WHO). Healthcare policies are very important in a society.
