Reflection on the PLOs and the CLOs

Reflection on the PLOs and the CLOs

PLO 1: Demonstrate knowledge of child development principles, including cognitive, language, physical, and affective domains, in creating environments that are healthy, supportive, and challenging for children.

All domains of child development—physical development, cognitive development, social and emotional development, and linguistic development (including bilingual or multilingual development), as well as approaches to learning—are essential; each domain supports and is supported by the others.

Early childhood educators are responsible for fostering children’s development and learning in all these domains and general learning competencies and executive functioning, including attention, working memory, self-regulation, reasoning, problem-solving, and approaches to learning. There is considerable overlap and interaction across these domains and competencies. For example, sound nutrition, physical activity, and sufficient sleep all promote children’s abilities to engage in social exchanges that, in turn, stimulate cognitive growth.

Children who experience predictable, responsive relationships and interactions with adults also tend to demonstrate improved general learning competencies and executive functioning.

This PLO supported my professional goals by enhancing my knowledge of creating a healthy, supportive, and challenging environment for children. I now understand the importance of providing developmentally appropriate toys and how these educational toys can help develop problem-solving skills, cause, and effect, fine and gross motor skills, etc.

Example: Creating Appropriate Lesson Plans

PLO 2. Analyze the influence and impact of families and communities on a child’s learning and development.

Family is the basic foundation of the society. It is inside the home that a child learns and develops through discipline. Inside the house, they are taught the necessary characteristics, morals, and behaviors to socialize in the community or society where she lives and which they will carry throughout their lives. The family educates her, guides her, and monitors her to grow and become a moral and social-thinking citizen of society. In addition, it is the family that significantly affects and supports them to become the better version of their selves by letting them feel that they are valued and loved.

Also, learning does not only happen at home. It comes in various areas, such as the school, the church, and the society or community where she lives.

The community helps a child to learn and develop through social support. Also, through the laws and various policies, rules, and regulations, a child learns to abide by them. She knows to be aware of the things that are right and wrong, so she becomes more meticulous, observant, and vigilant of what she does. She learns to be obedient and behave according to what society is expected of her to be.

Through this, she becomes social and active in building relationships that would help her develop personally and professionally.

The family and the community are very influential in a child’s development. Therefore, one must always see that what we teach our children are morals or lessons that would help them become the best version of themselves.

This PLO has reinforced my knowledge of how families and communities play a vital role in children’s lives. How creating bonds ensures the overall success of the student. When we work together as a community, I truly believe it gives children a sense of belonging and is crucial to building their identity.

Example: Family Events (Spring Social, Bingo Night, Book Swap, and Multicultural Night)

PLO 3. Design and assess developmentally appropriate strategies and programs promoting positive development and learning for children.

A good teacher or family childcare provider selects a method appropriate for the circumstance. It’s critical to think about what the kids already know and can accomplish and the learning objectives for the event. We can discover which technique is most successful by keeping flexible and vigilant. If one strategy fails, try a different one.

This PLO has helped me understand the importance of knowing every child in my care, observing them daily, and building a curriculum based on their needs and interests, ensuring every child has the chance to grow, advance, and develop.

Example: Model attitudes, ways of approaching problems, and behavior toward others, showing children rather than just telling them (“Hmm, that didn’t work, and I need to think about why.” “I’m sorry, Ben, I missed part of what you said. Please tell me again.”)

PLO 4 Apply leadership principles in directing and managing a childcare setting.

The role of the educational leader is primarily to collaborate with educators and provide curriculum direction and guidance. Support educators to effectively implement the planning cycle to enhance programs and practices. Lead the development and implementation of an effective educational program in the service.

This PLO supported my professional goals by helping me continue advancing in my career; education is constantly evolving, and it’s essential as an educator to be a life learner. I do yearly professional development; I plan to earn my master’s within two years. I always strive to be the best version of myself; I’m constantly trying to elevate myself, so my students can have the best learning experience.

  • Example: Support educators to effectively implement the cycle of planning to enhance programs and practices

PLO 5 Identify components of personnel management in recruiting, hiring, and maintaining staff in quality childcare settings.

Having this is something we must grasp to be better staff members for the children, and having this in any setting, not just a childcare environment, is critical because it will assist in retaining teachers with higher standards and attributes in educating children. I am competent to a limited degree in helping with the hiring process and recruiting instructors. Since we focused on the fundamentals of a portion of the process, each location is unique and will approach the recruiting process differently when hiring someone for a job inside their facilities. Course Learning Outcomes

CLO1: Synthesize the field’s theories, knowledge, and professional standards.

In this course, I was given a clear understanding of the professional standard that NAEYC represents and as they relate to early childhood education. These professional standards are a road map for teachers. For example, I know that I have the tools to provide quality care by following these professional standards combined with my knowledge of children.

CLO2: Assess multiple influences such as social and cultural factors, contemporary issues, and trends in practice in this field of study.

In this course, I can learn the importance of research by using online sources, articles, scholarly sources, and journals to conduct research and utilize them to my advantage. I know that by assessing multiple influences, such as social and cultural factors, I can ensure that children and staff are respected and treated fairly.

CLO3: Apply evidence-based strategies, approaches, and technologies related to the field of study.

The CLO supports my professional goal because I can conduct and use research to apply evidence-based strategies in the classroom. For example, research reveals that exploratory play helps to increase and enhance a child’s learning. I feel competent because these strategies help approach new technological tools to enhance a traditional classroom setting with 21st-century innovation.

CLO4: Explain environments that support outcomes to the field of study.

With the help of the CLO, I’ve learned how to create a learning environment in which kids feel safe and comfortable, allowing them to engage and realize their full potential for academic success. I might utilize this information to design a classroom where the children and their age-appropriate resources are supported by developmentally appropriate activities when I’m teaching, for example. A sense of competence comes from being in a classroom where students’ interests and educational destinies are reflected. Consequently, children will have access to instructional games and activities.

CLO5: Propose professional and ethical practices emphasizing access, participation, and partnerships.

This CLO enhanced my knowledge of inclusion and emphasized access, participation, and partnerships with children and families. For example, I understand that children learn differently, and each child should be met at their developmental level. Yes, I feel competent in this CLO because I know the importance of inclusion and family involvement.
