Reflection on Achieving Nursing Competencies
Learning plays a significant role in the development of various competencies. One of the course competencies I have achieved is the application of safe, effective, multidimensional nursing practice when providing care for clients with neurological disorders. I have achieved this competency by reviewing various case studies that offer knowledge of these strategies and their effectiveness in enhancing evidence-based practice. The new knowledge gained related to this competency was the significance of rapid intervention and assessment in improving patient outcomes.
The second competency that I have achieved is outlining appropriate nursing strategies for offering care to perioperative clients. I have achieved this competency by participating in simulations focused on perioperative care, including postoperative monitoring and preoperative assessments. The new knowledge gained related to this competency was the significance of the surgical time-out protocol in preventing errors. This knowledge helped me understand the need for communication and attention to detail among the surgical team.
I was also able to compare nursing interventions for clients with complex disorders and identify strategies for safe nursing practice of clients with multi-system organ failure by reviewing case studies on the recognition of vital signs in multi-organ failure assessment and complex disorders and safe nursing practices that should be considered when caring for patients with these health issues. The new knowledge gained related to comparing nursing interventions for clients with complex disorders was the application of a holistic approach in managing complex disorders and the importance of individualized care plans that address psychosocial and physical needs. The new knowledge related to identifying strategies for safe nursing practice for clients with multi-system organ failure was the importance of early recognition of the signs of organ failure and the need for continuous patient assessment.
Reviewing case studies and participating in simulations also helped me learn how to prioritize nursing interventions for clients with medical emergencies and summarize the nurse’s role and caring strategies for clients during disasters. The new knowledge gained related to prioritizing nursing interventions for clients with medical emergencies was the use of the Airway, Breathing, and Circulation (ABCs) as a strategy for prioritizing nursing care. I also gained new knowledge related to summarizing the nurse’s role and care strategies for clients during disasters. For example, I gained knowledge on the role of nurses in disaster preparation and the importance of having a disaster response plan.
The course was also essential in developing critical thinking as a transferable skill. According to Karaca (2023), critical thinking is a vital skill in nursing because it supports effective decision-making and problem-solving. I achieved critical thinking through collaborative learning with my peers and reflective practice. I also gained new knowledge related to critical thinking. For example, I gained knowledge of the nursing process, which includes patient assessment and diagnosis, planning and implementing nursing interventions, and evaluating the application of the nursing interventions to determine their effectiveness. This knowledge will impact my nursing practice by enhancing my ability to analyze patient data and intervene on time, leading to improved patient outcomes.
