Reflection – Ethics in IT
Understanding this IT course has dramatically influenced my ethical behavior in various ways. Ethical behaviors are a broad field, including issues such as how individuals treat others, use information, engage with the junior staff, manage resources, and approach the concept of sustainability (Reynolds, 2014). Notably, today’s customers are most concerned about how employees are treated within the organizational setting and the corporate social responsibility the organization has set out to accomplish.
After going through this IT course, I realized that there are ethical activities that I will stop doing. For instance, I will stop misusing personal information. Companies often collect personal information belonging to the customers as they browse various internet sites, make online purchases, enter information on websites, or even engage with various businesses on different social media platforms (Reynolds, 2014). In this regard, some may tap this critical information belonging to the customer and sell it to political figures interested in knowing the social and legal issues affecting society (Reynolds, 2014). Also, I will stop propelling misinformation and deep fakes by manipulating digital imagery that would allow people to appear to say and do things that never happened.
However, there are ethical activities that I look forward to not only starting but also continuing in my future professional life. For instance, I will begin respecting employees and customers. While data is valuable to a business engaging in ethical technology, it is also essential that I take care of employees and customers as they are identified as the greatest assets of an organization. I will also ensure that I morally use data and resources. As an essential resource, data allows companies to effectively target their marketing strategies and refine their product offerings (Reynolds, 2014). Therefore, implementing data protection measures and compliance will go a long way in helping prevent data leakage.
Some things that will enable me to commit to these changes include treating everyone with respect and dignity, understanding the regulations governing data use, and adopting a culture of responsibility. Treating everyone with dignity will enable me to accord employees and customers the respect they deserve. Also, understanding compliance standards will expound my knowledge of the channel I can follow in the responsible adoption of disruptive technology. Lastly, adopting a culture of responsibility will ensure that I am always concerned about technology’s safe and ethical usage.
