Reflecting on My Quiz Results – Insights and Personal Reflection

Reflecting on My Quiz Results – Insights and Personal Reflection

I selected the Transgender (‘Transgender People – Cisgender People’) IAT, which required me to categorize photos of transgender and cisgender celebrities and positive and negative words. The IAT results suggest a strong automatic preference for cisgender people over transgender people. I feel conflicted about these. The results are a total contradiction of how I view myself. The results make me a bit surprised and kind of heartbroken, noting that I have friends who are or openly support the transgender community. I have also chosen to be open-minded and see the reasons why others choose to change their gender identity. I have never discriminated against anyone based on their gender identity. The overall Transgender IAT results make me look at myself a bit differently. I have a lot of questions about my behaviors towards transgender people or individuals who support the community. I wonder if I have openly expressed any condescending behaviors when I am around transgender people or unknowingly said things that hurt them or to people who support the community.

Although Dr. Ndidiamaka Amutah-Onukagha’s presentation focuses on her painful experiences within maternal and childcare settings due to her race, the presentation shows how racism within the healthcare system contributes to discrimination in the delivery of care services. Sufficient evidence supports every experience and observation Dr. Ndidiamaka makes, including the loss of her child and the loss of her friend during child delivery due to discriminative behaviors from care providers. For instance, Van Daalen et al. (2022) note that racial discrimination is a factor in adverse outcomes in pregnancy, with Wynn (2019) arguing that pregnant Black women are more likely to experience racism and discrimination in healthcare settings, leading to such adverse outcomes. I have also seen similar outcomes in the workplace, with Black and women of color having poor health outcomes, including maternal and child health outcomes.
