Cultural considerations

            Caring for a child with cystic fibrosis requires cultural awareness to ensure effective treatment. Language barriers may hinder communication, requiring a medical interpreter. Some families may rely on alternative medicine, which could conflict with prescribed treatments (Soled, 2020). Dietary restrictions also vary across cultures, necessitating nutritional education that aligns with their traditions while meeting the child’s high-calorie, high-protein dietary needs: Real Life RN Nursing Care of Children 3.0 – Cystic Fibrosis Inpatient Care.

Ethical dilemmas

            An ethical issue in CF care is the parents refusing treatment on personal or religious grounds. Refusal of treatments by some parents may threaten a child’s well-being (Pirotte & Benson, 2023). I would explain such refusal of treatments to such parents and explain the reasons for such treatments in such a case. In case of continued refusal, I would call for help from a medical team or an ethics committee on a child’s behalf.

“Aha” Moment

            A big “Aha” moment for me is realizing the importance of chest physiotherapy in preventing infection of the lungs. I previously thought medications were CF care’s most critical element, but now I realize mucus clearance is just as critical (Warnock & Gates, 2023). This new understanding will shape my nursing in the future by ensuring I give priority to treatments for the lungs and educate families on keeping airways unblocked in the home.

Aspects of Client Care that i Did Not Feel Prepared for

            I did not have experience in infection control for managing Burkholderia cepacia. I did not grasp the reason for using stringent contact precautions (Tavares et al., 2020). Having grasped the risk of cross-contamination among CF patients, I shall apply stringent infection control practices, such as hand hygiene and precaution in isolations, for patient safety in the future.

Important Concepts Learned and Application

            Key concepts I have gained are infection prevention, enzyme treatment, chest physiotherapy, secure enteral nutrition, and being culturally sensitive. I will employ these by being stringent in taking precautions, giving medications appropriately, prioritizing airway clearance, ensuring the safety of enteral nutrition, and being culturally sensitive in communicating evidence-based CF care to relatives (Ocran et al., 2022). The above nursing care and patient outcomes will be improved.
