Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN)

Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN)

QSEN is an initiative developed from the collaboration among educators from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Nursing and other institutions in the United States (nursing.uworld.com, 2023). According to the QSEN Institute (n.d.), the QSEN initiative was established to help overcome the challenges of preparing future nurses with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) for continuous improvement of the healthcare systems they practice in. Therefore, the QSEN bridges the gap between classroom-based learning and practice to ensure nurses are competent enough to provide quality and safe care (Sherwood, 2021).

QSEN is related to the NUR 400-Research and Evidence-Based Practice course in a number of ways. Firstly, the course aims to equip nurse students with skills and knowledge on the basics of nursing research. It also equips the students with skills and knowledge on how to apply evidence in practice and utilize evidence to inform decisions. The course further equips the students with the knowledge and skills to critically appraise available evidence and utilize such evidence to shape care around the patient and solve healthcare problems of concern. Relatably, QSEN focuses on equipping nurses with critical competencies necessary for searching for and integrating the research evidence into their daily practice to continuously improve the quality and safety of care and patients (nursing.uworld.com, 2023). Additionally, in relation to this course, the QSEN also promotes the development of skills among pre-licensure and in-practice nurses on teamwork and collaboration in practice and research to ensure accuracy and timeliness of information sharing, supportive and collaborative decision-making, and smooth care transitions between providers for the best patient outcomes (Sherwood, 2021). Besides these, the Research and Evidence-Based Practice course and QSEN relate in their emphasis on the use of technology to support decision-making and the provision of quality and safe care.
