This study explores nurses’ experiences and perceived challenges in using non-pharmacological interventions to manage musculoskeletal pain. Despite the positive effects of non-pharmacological approaches in addressing pain, nurses have continuously registered negative attitudes toward them. The study was a descriptive qualitative study of 11 nurses from an orthopedic department in a public hospital. All the participants had a bachelor’s degree in nursing. A face-to-face semi-structured interview was used to explore their experiences and perceptions using non-pharmacological pain control measures in addressing musculoskeletal pain. The obtained data was analyzed using Colaizzi’s method.
The research study revealed that nurses opine on the need for constant monitoring when using non-pharmacological measures and appropriate selection of non-pharmacological modalities in treating musculoskeletal pain. Poor patient preferences for some non-pharmacological measures, pain severity, and shorter analgesic effects were some of the perceived patient-related barriers to using these modalities. Likewise, higher workload, inadequate professional support, and limited resources were some of the nurse-related barriers to using non-pharmacological measures.
The limitations of the study include the non-involvement of nurses with master of science degrees. Advanced nurses could have had a divergent opinion on non-pharmacological measures. Additionally, the study did not factor in nurses from the private sector, limiting the scope of the findings.
The authors concluded that the nursing workforce needs to enhance their utilization of non-pharmacological measures. This will help establish a culture that supports the practice. It will also enhance nurses’ role in the comprehensive management of pain.
The study remains relevant to the comprehensive management of chronic pain and the role of nurses in pain management. Pain management has traditionally integrated pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures. The study supporting non-pharmacological approaches within the nursing workforce, therefore, enhances nurses’ involvement in managing chronic pain.

This study explores the perceptions of surgical nurses in enhancing their proficiency in managing chronic pain. Nurses participate in the multidisciplinary care for patients with chronic pain and are involved in administering various pain management interventions. It is thus important that they are proficient in pain management.
The study utilized the qualitative design to describe the perceptions of nurses on the strategies to enhance their pain management proficiency. Open-ended questions were administered to forty surgical nurses. All the participants had a master of science in nursing degree and at least six years of experience in managing chronic pain. Braun and Clarke’s six-phase approach was used to analyze the obtained data.
The results revealed that the integration of multidisciplinary teams in pain management programs helped enhance the proficiency of surgical nurses in pain management. Nursing strategies that involved encouraging positive behaviors and attributed to pain management were also found to help improve the knowledge of pain assessment and management. Continuous familiarization with the patient’s case also bolsters nurses’ effectiveness in managing pain.
A possible limitation of the study was the integration of only advanced nurses as the study participants. This limits the scope of the findings to nurses with a master of science in nursing degree. However, pain management cuts across cadres and may also be implemented by nurses at lower levels.
Increasing nurses’ knowledge of pain management remains pivotal. Nurse partnerships in collaborative approaches, continuous familiarization with the clinical cases, and encouraging positive behaviors are key to enhancing pain management proficiency among nurses. However, increasing nurses’ knowledge of pain management is another sustainable approach to enhancing nurses’ proficiency in managing pain.
The research remains relevant to pain management. It highlights the role of nurses in managing pain and proposes strategies that nurses could use to enhance their practice proficiency. By improving their competency in pain management, nurses place themselves in a better position to address pain presentation, enhancing their presence and role in the care landscape.
