Psychology- Conformity Study
The principle of conformity is examined in a group where a line judgment task is used. A real and unsuspecting participant is placed in a room with seven actors who agreed to the answers they would give in advance (Heroic Imagination, 2012). The real participant is then observed to find how he will respond when his answers differ from that of the other group members.
The subject began to “second-guess” himself when all the other participants unanimously gave the wrong answer because he yielded to group influence and believed that if the majority saw one thing, then that must have been the correct thing.
Some of the circumstances that contribute to conformity in the group include the real subject trying to avoid the discomfort that comes with disagreeing with the majority and the belief that what the majority of people are seeing must be the right thing. Mcleon (2008) claims that when individuals perceive that other group members are more knowledgeable than themselves, they are likely to go along with what they say or do. Furthermore, when there are more people present and the task gets more difficult, then conformity increases.
Some participants would be more likely to conform than others because they are afraid that the group might disapprove of being deviant (normative conformity). In doing this, they seek acceptance (Jhangiani & Tarry, 2012). Furthermore, one would be convinced that what the group is saying must be right (informational conformity). This means that they believe that the other group members are better informed or smarter (Cherry, 2020).
I have been in different situations where I have been forced to conform. This has happened to me multiple times in class when people give wrong answers to questions. Like in the experiment, my need to conform was based on my need for acceptance as well as the belief that other people were better informed than I was.
