The problem identified is the nursing shortage in health organizations. Nurses play a vital role in the provision of care, and as medical conditions increase, there is a need for more nurses. Nursing shortage in ICU and other areas has been experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic; therefore, strategies for dealing with the shortage must be identified and implemented. Nurses at work experience burnout and mental disorders due to overworking, hence the need to deal with the nursing shortage. Some solutions to the nursing shortage problem are developing training and education programs for nurses, providing scholarships for further nurse education, and government funding for students qualified and interested in studying nursing.

Training and education of qualified nurses in the healthcare organization help reduce nursing shortages in various departments. With the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a shortage of specialized nurses in the ICU. Other generalized and unspecialized can work in the ICU to cover the shortage when trained and educated by the few available ICU nurses. Therefore, by specialized nurses training and educating other general nurses, the shortage of nurses in various hospital departments that require specialization will be solved (Lester, Dharmarajan & Weinstein, 2020). The general nurses will get the skills and knowledge to work in the areas where there is a shortage when trained and educated regularly, which will cover the shortage (Bvumbwe & Mtshali, 2018). Health organizations with shortages in certain areas requiring further education or specialization can sponsor employed nurses to have further education. Scholarship programs from healthcare organizations help in educating nurses to get more knowledge and skills (Lester, Dharmarajan & Weinstein, 2020). By advancing their education, nurses reduce the shortage in areas that need specialization.

Many students have the desire to study nursing, but they are unable to do so due to the high cost of nursing education. The students have the qualifications, but the medical college fees are considerably high. The government can, therefore, intervene and fund the many students qualified to study nursing (Bvumbwe & Mtshali, 2018). Through the education of nursing students, there will be more students qualifying as nurses, which will help reduce the nursing shortage. Healthcare organizations and non-governmental organizations can also sponsor poor students qualified to pursue nursing to become qualified nurses (Bvumbwe & Mtshali, 2018). Healthcare organizations can also start nursing schools to train nurses who later cover the shortage when they qualify.
