Prevention, Mitigation, and Preparedness and Community Resilience in Disaster Response
State of California Emergency Preparedness
In the state of California emergency website, the state is always ready to protect the people of California, its resources, and critical infrastructure, and it is the core responsibility of the government to do so. Through its legislative arm, the government has put in place various laws to enable the state to set aside enough funds to prepare for both human disasters, such as terrorism and natural disasters (Ghilardicci & Brown, 2017). Preparedness training and exercises ate carried out regularly by the disaster management agencies to gauge the level of their response. Here, the exercise includes seminars, drills and tests, functional exercises, and full-scale exercises (Ghilardicci & Brown, 2017, pp. 45-46). On mitigation, California has a State Enhanced Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan that is key in managing disasters. Also, there are procedures set out to carry out a vulnerability assessment and prioritize actions meant to reduce vulnerabilities (Ghilardicci & Brown, 2017, p. 95).
These strategies have proven efficient in disasters as multi-agency cooperation always exists in ending disaster effects. From flooding to earthquakes and common forest fires, forecasting the occurrence of natural disasters and the subsequent evacuation of citizens has helped save life and property. Residents have previously received warnings of imminent disasters in time, and those who have been caught up in disasters are often rescued within a short time. The training of personnel and involvement of citizens in drills depicting real disasters is an excellent way to prepare citizens in anticipation of the occurrences of disasters.
