Presentation – Direct and Indirect Teaching Strategies
Hello, and welcome to the presentation on learning strategies. This presentation aims to provide details about direct and indirect learning strategies, their characteristics, differences, and their application in a learning setting.
This slide presents the significant features of the direct instruction strategy, as discussed in chapter 9 of the text. Direct instruction is a teacher-directed approach that uses systematic and sequential lessons. In direct instruction, the teacher explains lessons and models how students should learn and practice the content and how they should be corrected (Borich, 1988). This strategy is appropriate for introducing new concepts and skills, and its purpose is to guarantee that the students systematically acquire the knowledge.
These are the aspects of the indirect instruction strategy. Explanations are embedded and it is more student oriented and involves problem solving and critical analysis. Students are involved in the learning process and the teacher is more or less a moderator who simply assists the students in their learning process. This strategy is appropriate for the creation of higher-order thinking abilities and fosters independent and group learning. The emphasis of this approach is on the development of learners’ thinking skills and their capacity to relate the knowledge to various situations.
