According to Roediger et al. (2011), pre-tests are used at the beginning of courses to determine the knowledge baseline on a subject. This is then related to the end result of the exam of a course to assess the knowledge that a student gains. Pre-tests can also be utilized in judging the prerequisite material’s depth of understanding. Thirdly, pre-tests, as was the case here, can be used to test the student’s knowledge before the course material is covered. Although this may seem counter-intuitive, the students cover material that the instructor is yet to cover; hence, the student is not expected to have sufficient knowledge. The idea behind pre-tests is to give students a preview of what to expect from the course, the material that will be covered, and the depth of knowledge that will be needed. The pre-test thus serves as a map while simultaneously getting a quantifiable measure of students’ knowledge that they already possess over a specific topic (Cavalli et al., 2014).

The pre-test took me 3 hours to complete, and this was adequate time for me to complete it. The questions appeared to be quite straightforward. However, as soon as I got my results, it dawned on me that I may have rushed through the process and did not take time to clearly understand the questions. Of particular concern are the topics on Men’s Health, Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat, Endocrine and Psychiatry, which I performed surprisingly quite poorly.

I had several areas where I performed below 70 percent. These subject areas include Dermatology, Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat; Endocrine, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics; Women’s Health, Urology, and Psychiatry. I scored a zero in Men’s health. It is shocking that I seem to know nothing much about men’s health. However, as I was doing the exam, I did not give my all to it as I was extremely fatigued. I had just completed a double shift the day I took the exam. I assumed I didn’t have to be physically and mentally prepared for the exam. I need to raise my scores, and to do this, I will need to plan before taking an exam. In this regard, planning means being physically and mentally ready to handle the exams. I will also need to complete the APEA practice exams, and other recommended resources while focusing on the areas where I scored the lowest.

I scored 100 points in STI exams and 70 points each in Cardiovascular and Professional Issues. I do not know what to make of these results, as the topics seemed quite straightforward. I am not particularly satisfied with these scores seeing they form a very small fraction compared to the total topic areas. I intend to work hard to ensure that I don’t get such low scores in the other topics while improving on the ones I got 70 points. I will utilize the APEA [QBank exams], Purchase Maria Codina’s Leik’s Family Nurse Practitioner Intense Review, and Third Edition: Fast Facts and Practice Questions to achieve this. I will focus on the content I am weakest in with my APEA Pre-Predictor exam first and then review the entire book. I will also ensure I complete the 700 prep questions at the back of the book.
