Practicum Experience Plan

Practicum Experience Plan

The primary objective of the practicum is to expand the learners’ knowledge and expand in specific course areas. The practicum sessions and the highlighted working objectives are a roadmap towards professional excellence as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), as they bolster PMHNP’s knowledge base, decision-making, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration with other caregivers. I expected to gather insights into collaborative nursing care, mental health promotion, and the best practices in high-quality mental healthcare. The practicum is  established on the precinct of one nursing and counseling theory.

The nursing theory that guided the practicum session is the trans-cultural theory. This theory provides a framework for culturally congruent care by emphasizing the need to understand patients’ cultural backgrounds and how it impacts care (Berhanu et al., 2021). In this respect, PMHNPs should maintain cultural awareness and demonstrate best practices in transcultural care to better handle patients from different cultures. Entering the practicum, I anticipate providing care to diverse patient groups. I intend to bolster my trans-cultural communication skills and cultural awareness to collaborate with cross-cultural caregivers and patients and provide psycho-education to diverse patient groups.

The counseling theory that guided the practicum session is the holistic counseling theory. The holistic theory integrates all aspects of wellness (Phan et al., 2021). Entering the practicum, I anticipate meeting mental health patients with diverse suffering and presentations. By addressing all components of my patient’s wellness, I believe I will be able to produce a greater impact on their wellness.
