Poor Economic Stability and How That Shapes Health
Economic status determines an individual’s living conditions, ability to afford healthy foods, access to education, means of transportation, and healthcare services, which shape their health outcomes. Improving economic stability as a social determinant of health can help address a majority of factors contributing to disparities in healthcare access with an impact on health outcomes (Artiga & Hinton, 2019). However, this can only be achieved by adopting substantial initiatives and policies that improve income and financial literacy levels and strategies that enable people to find and keep work.
Achieving economic stability is a significant objective of the Healthy People 2030 initiative. The Healthy People 2030 identifies establishing employment and career counseling programs as effective strategies to help people earn a substantial income to meet the financial costs of their health needs (health.gov, 2021). Another strategy is establishing quality child support and care programs to help families, especially mothers, to be able to work and contribute to household income. As per Healthy People 2030, economic stability can also be achieved by reducing income expenditures on housing, reducing workplace injuries contributing to off days, and increasing employment opportunities for working-age people, especially those from historically marginalized and minority backgrounds (Health.gov, 2021).
Poor economic stability and poor health outcomes can be resolved by considering the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 or the Recovery Act signed by then-President Barack Obama (obamawhitehouse.archives.gov, n.d.). The Recovery Plan has provisions that focus on improving economic stability, such as increasing the minimum wage, improving the quality of education, and providing work opportunities to help communities identify economic opportunities. Additionally, the Act has provisions that seek to support the stability of families in the U.S, improve people’s financial literacy, and eliminate income disparities. It also supports community-level entrepreneurship, tools that will enhance financial stability for students, and promotes retirement-focused savings and investments.
