Political History of Japan
The political history of Japan is characterized and conducted through a model of a multi-party bicameral parliamentary structure and a democratic constitutional monarchy. The system is run by a constitutional monarchy with an Emperor as the ceremonial head of state. The system also makes use of a Prime Minister who acts as the head of the Cabinet, the head of government, which heads the executive arm in the country. All these functions have a connection with a detailed history of denigration of rulers and figureheads.
From a historical context, Japan was founded in 660 BC (“Political History of Japan During the Meiji Era, 1867-1912,” 2013). Among the influential leaders of the country is Oda Nobunaga, who made great contributions by advancing weaponry. He is known in history as the first leader to have his army men use guns during battles. In terms of democracy, he is considered a great contributor to the freedom and liberty that is enjoyed in the country today.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi is another leader in Japan who was born as a peasant. Toyotomi operated under the rule of Nobunaga and developed from a common soldier to an influential and respected military leader in Japan. He controlled and dictated Japan’s political environment up to the time of his death in 1598, by forming alliances and advancing military force.
From the past political history of the country, it can be noted that there is a mix of both democracy and dictatorship. The current constitution defines Japan and North Korea as a dictatorship of people’s democracy. The definition is provided under the leadership of the Workers Party of Korea (WPK) (HINO, 2017).
From this context, it can be concluded that Japan is not a 100% democratic nation. The fight for a democratic state is still underway and there is hope to achieve victory in future.
