The breakdown of political competence into its four components, political knowledge, political interaction, political efficacy, and political activity, provides a comprehensive understanding of the skills and attributes required for effective political engagement within the nursing profession (Patton et al., 2019). Political knowledge is a crucial aspect of political competence. Nurses need to be well-informed about political processes, policies, and healthcare systems to navigate the complexities of the political landscape. Through political knowledge, nurses can analyze and assess the impact of political decisions on patient outcomes and advocate for necessary changes (Patton et al., 2019).

The dimension of political efficacy is also significant, as it encompasses internal and external political efficacy and pride in nursing. Nurses with a sense of efficacy in their political capabilities are more likely to engage in political activities and advocate for positive change (Patton et al., 2019). Nurses can effectively advocate for their profession’s and patients’ needs by building confidence in their abilities to influence political processes. Furthermore, the dimension of political activity emphasizes the importance of actively participating in politics. Nurses must be organized, committed to community service, and capable of building networks and persuading others (O’Malley, 2022). Nurses can directly impact shaping healthcare policies and improving patient outcomes by taking on political leadership roles, engaging in political advocacy, and participating in policy interventions.

I also agree with the significance of developing political competence skills to understand all aspects of politics. Nurses can navigate the legislative process effectively and engage with legislators at various levels by acquiring political knowledge and attributes. Political competence is an essential skill that every individual or leader must possess to navigate the political process toward their desired outcome successfully. A core nursing competency is “the ability to practice nursing that meets the needs of clients cared for using logical thinking and accurate nursing skills. This has four abilities: providing care, understanding needs, collaborating, and supporting decision-making, which is used in the nursing practice setting.   “This is a crucial tool for individuals and leaders to advance their objectives in the political environment. Making changes to the healthcare system is difficult due to organizational politics within healthcare organizations. To navigate the complex political environment of healthcare organizations, leadership development programs should prioritize the development of “political skills.” This skill set is essential in understanding and managing the diverse stakeholders involved in healthcare, enabling leaders to make informed decisions that benefit all parties involved. Political competence is a requirement for nurses to decrease organizational challenges and achieve positive outcomes.

As a nurse, it’s essential to possess political competence to engage in political involvement within our professional role effectively. This includes having the necessary skills, perspectives, and values to positively impact the healthcare system and advocate for the needs of our patients. By staying informed on political issues related to nursing and healthcare, we can use our expertise to influence policy decisions and ensure our voices are heard. Nurses can benefit their communities by gaining political training and involvement in local councils and committees. Political knowledge encompasses three vital attributes – political knowledge, political information, and systematic analysis ability. The dimension of political efficacy comprises three crucial attributes that cannot be overlooked: internal political efficacy, external political efficacy, and pride in the nursing profession. These attributes must be thoroughly understood and acknowledged to succeed in the field. Regarding political involvement, three essential qualities hold significant value: being organized and committed to serving the community, building a solid network, and being able to persuade others. The dimension of political activity includes six attributes: political leadership, expression, assertive behavior, political advocacy, political participation, and policy intervention.

It is crucial to develop political competence skills to understand all aspects of politics comprehensively. Nurses need knowledge and attribution to perform politically, strengthening the health care system and the outcome of patients. Voting is the first step to participating in politics, but engaging legislators locally, regionally, and nationally requires knowledge of the legislative process. “Political skill incorporates personality and interpersonal and group-level processes and is a mechanism through which goal-directed behavior is activated in pursuit of interpersonal objectives or outcomes achievement.” Having political skills is crucial for one’s professional growth, particularly for advancing in one’s career and mastering the art of influencing organizational politics.
