Political Competence in the Healthcare System

Political Competence in the Healthcare System

Peer Response 1

Hello,

This is a great post: I appreciate your insightful discussion about the importance of political competence for nurse leaders. I wholeheartedly agree that political competence is a crucial skill nurse leaders must possess to navigate the complex political environment within healthcare organizations and effectively advocate for positive change. The description of political competence as a core nursing competency aligns well with the nursing profession’s commitment to providing logical thinking and accurate nursing skills to meet the needs of patients (Mason et al., 2021). Nurse leaders need to develop political skills that allow them to understand and manage the diverse stakeholders involved in healthcare.

I also agree with the point about political competence’s significance in creating a fair healthcare system. As nurses, we have a unique perspective and expertise that can greatly contribute to shaping compassionate policies and addressing the broader determinants of health (Mason et al., 2021). By actively staying informed about political issues related to nursing and healthcare, we can use our voices to influence policy decisions and advocate for the needs of our patients.

The example provided of nurse leaders taking on leadership roles in healthcare organizations and advocating for positive legislation is an excellent demonstration of political competence at the local level. By actively engaging in these roles, nurse leaders can drive positive change within their organizations and work towards improving policies that benefit professionals and patients (Patton et al., 2019). Additionally, the suggestion of gaining political training and involvement in local councils and committees further highlights the proactive approach nurse leaders can take to contribute to the healthcare system at a grassroots level (Swan, 2019). The idea of nurse leaders running for office is also worth emphasizing. By holding political positions, nurse leaders can directly impact policymaking processes and advocate for the needs of the nursing profession. Notably, Patton et al. (2019) note that this presents a unique opportunity to drive positive change and promote policies that enhance patient care and outcomes.

Hi,

This is such a comprehensive post. The breakdown of political competence into its four components, political knowledge, political interaction, political efficacy, and political activity, provides a comprehensive understanding of the skills and attributes required for effective political engagement within the nursing profession (Patton et al., 2019). Political knowledge is a crucial aspect of political competence. Nurses need to be well-informed about political processes, policies, and healthcare systems to navigate the complexities of the political landscape. Through political knowledge, nurses can analyze and assess the impact of political decisions on patient outcomes and advocate for necessary changes (Patton et al., 2019).

The dimension of political efficacy is also significant, as it encompasses internal and external political efficacy and pride in nursing. Nurses with a sense of efficacy in their political capabilities are more likely to engage in political activities and advocate for positive change (Patton et al., 2019). Nurses can effectively advocate for their profession’s and patients’ needs by building confidence in their abilities to influence political processes. Furthermore, the dimension of political activity emphasizes the importance of actively participating in politics. Nurses must be organized, committed to community service, and capable of building networks and persuading others (O’Malley, 2022). Nurses can directly impact shaping healthcare policies and improving patient outcomes by taking on political leadership roles, engaging in political advocacy, and participating in policy interventions.

I also agree with the significance of developing political competence skills to understand all aspects of politics. Nurses can navigate the legislative process effectively and engage with legislators at various levels by acquiring political knowledge and attributes. This engagement is crucial for advancing the nursing profession, influencing organizational politics, and advocating for changes that benefit professionals and patients (O’Malley, 2022). Overall, by developing political knowledge, interaction, efficacy, and activity, nurses can actively engage in political processes, advocate for positive change, and influence the outcome of patients.

Political Competence in the Healthcare System

Peer Response 1

Political competence is an essential skill that every individual or leader must possess to navigate the political process toward their desired outcome successfully. A core nursing competency is “the ability to practice nursing that meets the needs of clients cared for using logical thinking and accurate nursing skills. This has four abilities: providing care, understanding needs, collaborating, and supporting decision-making, which is used in the nursing practice setting.   “This is a crucial tool for individuals and leaders to advance their objectives in the political environment. Making changes to the healthcare system is difficult due to organizational politics within healthcare organizations. To navigate the complex political environment of healthcare organizations, leadership development programs should prioritize the development of “political skills.” This skill set is essential in understanding and managing the diverse stakeholders involved in healthcare, enabling leaders to make informed decisions that benefit all parties involved. Political competence is a requirement for nurses to decrease organizational challenges and achieve positive outcomes.

As a nurse, it’s essential to possess political competence to engage in political involvement within our professional role effectively. This includes having the necessary skills, perspectives, and values to positively impact the healthcare system and advocate for the needs of our patients. By staying informed on political issues related to nursing and healthcare, we can use our expertise to influence policy decisions and ensure our voices are heard. We must recognize the importance of political competence and continue developing it throughout our nursing careers. Nurses need political competence to create a fair healthcare system. They should work on the broader determinants of health, collaborate with diverse groups, and shape compassionate policies for patients. During daily care, we know the more experienced curse is more competent in decision-making in critical situations than the newcomer or one-year experience. Nurses influence politics and policies on state and federal levels, at the local level nurses should take leadership roles in healthcare organizations and advocate for positive legislation to shape the healthcare system and meet the needs of professionals and patients. Nurses can benefit their communities by gaining political training and involvement in local councils and committees. Running for office can drive positive change for patients and the healthcare system.

Having political competence is crucial in the healthcare system, especially for nurses. It involves possessing the necessary skills, perspectives, and values to participate in political activities within the nursing profession effectively. Political competence includes four components: political knowledge, political interaction, political efficacy, and political activity.  Political competence is an essential skill that improves patient outcomes. Political knowledge encompasses three vital attributes – political knowledge, political information, and systematic analysis ability. The dimension of political efficacy comprises three crucial attributes that cannot be overlooked: internal political efficacy, external political efficacy, and pride in the nursing profession. These attributes must be thoroughly understood and acknowledged to succeed in the field. Regarding political involvement, three essential qualities hold significant value: being organized and committed to serving the community, building a solid network, and being able to persuade others. The dimension of political activity includes six attributes: political leadership, expression, assertive behavior, political advocacy, political participation, and policy intervention.

It is crucial to develop political competence skills to understand all aspects of politics comprehensively. Nurses need knowledge and attribution to perform politically, strengthening the health care system and the outcome of patients. Voting is the first step to participating in politics, but engaging legislators locally, regionally, and nationally requires knowledge of the legislative process. “Political skill incorporates personality and interpersonal and group-level processes and is a mechanism through which goal-directed behavior is activated in pursuit of interpersonal objectives or outcomes achievement.” Having political skills is crucial for one’s professional growth, particularly for advancing in one’s career and mastering the art of influencing organizational politics.
