Summary of strengths:
The assessment form provided insights into my clinical strengths in psychotherapy across the lifespan. I am confident in performing a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and can recognize the clinical signs of psychiatric illnesses. I can also perform physical exams, interpret mental status exams, and functional assessments for patients with mental health illnesses.
I am also confident in developing and prioritizing differential diagnoses and psychological and physiological symptoms. My pharmacotherapeutic, professional, and self-assessment skills are also excellent. I can recognize therapeutic modalities across the lifespan, develop SMART goals, maintain professional boundaries, and maintain a therapeutic relationship with my clients. |
Opportunities for growth:
Growth opportunities still exist in diverse clinical areas. I am mostly confident in performing psycho-education and promoting health promotional interventions to my clients, and I believe I can improve my health promotion skills. I am also not comfortable distinguishing pathophysiological conditions from psychopathological conditions and hope to improve in the area. Collaborating with diverse practitioners also poses a challenge to my clinical experiences and practices.
I can improve my ability to engage and collaborate with healthcare professionals from different cadres. Selecting appropriate evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for psychotherapeutic plans is another area in which I should improve. Understanding psychotherapeutic guidelines is vital in evidence-based practice, where clinical decision-making is pegged on scientific evidence. |
Now, write three to four (3–4) possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience.
Ensure that they follow the SMART Strategy, as described in the Learning Resources.
1. Goal: I will be able to perform psychoeducation to individuals and groups by the third week of the practicum.
a. Objective: To understand the clinical presentation of common mental health illnesses, including the risk factors, management strategies, and health promotion aspects. b. Objective: To verbalize best practices in cross-cultural communication to enable engagements with diverse clients. c. Objective: To improve my therapeutic communication and collaborative skills to establish a rapport with my clients. 2. Goal: By the tenth week of the practicum, I will be able to confidently engage cross-cultural clients and practitioners. a. Objective: To demonstrate best practices in therapeutic communication, such as active listening, role interdependence, and respect, when engaging other practitioners. b. Objective: To understand the significance of therapeutic communications in clinical decision-making processes. c. Objective: To demonstrate cultural awareness and humility, which are necessary in cross-cultural clinical engagements. 3. Goal: By the sixth week of the practicum, I will be able to confidently distinguish pathophysiological and psycho-pathological conditions. a. Objective: To understand common pathophysiological and psycho-pathological conditions across the lifespan. b. Objective: To identify the overlapping manifestations of common pathophysiological and psycho-pathological conditions. c. Objective: To understand and identify the clinical symptoms of different psychopathological and pathophysiological conditions. 4. Goal: By the fourth week of the practicum, I will be able to select appropriate evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for a psychotherapeutic plan. a. Objective: To verbalize the practice guidelines for psychotherapeutic plans for common mental health disorders. b. Objective: To be able to appraise a therapeutic guideline, identifying its validity in informing therapeutic plans. c. Objective: To be able to successfully apply a clinical practice guideline in designing a therapeutic plan for patients. |

Question
CLINICAL SKILLS SELF-ASSESSMENT
Before embarking on any professional or academic activity, it is important to understand the background, knowledge, and experience you bring to it. You might ask yourself, “What do I already know? What do I need to know? And what do I want to know?” This critical self-reflection is especially important for developing clinical skills such as those for advanced practice nursing.
The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Clinical Skills List and Clinical Skills Self-Assessment Form provided in the Learning Resources can be used to celebrate your progress throughout your practicum and identify skills gaps. The list covers all necessary skills you should demonstrate during your practicum experiences.
Just as you did in PRAC 6635, for this Assignment, you assess where you are now in your clinical skill development and make plans for this practicum. Specifically, you will identify strengths and opportunities for improvement regarding the required practicum skills. In this practicum experience, when developing your goals and objectives, be sure to keep assessment and diagnostic reasoning in mind.
