According to the mentor, planning is the decisions made around organizing, evaluating, and implementing instruction to ensure learning outcomes are achieved. The mentor emphasized that planning is a vital factor that any teacher must be mindful of for the learning process to be successful. For my mentor teacher, classroom planning has three fundamental elements; learning objectives, learning activities, and the tools to check for understanding.

It was clear from the explanation that learning objectives are the primary aim of planning. Therefore, to plan a classroom well, a teacher should first identify the learning objectives that they wish to address by questioning themselves on what the teacher wishes to see learners achieve by the end of the lesson, what they wish them to be able to do with the information they will learn and by zeroing on the topic (Machado and Helen 78). After establishing the objectives, the teacher should rank them in order of significance to assist with time management. While planning, the mentor stressed that one should identify the most vital concepts in the lesson, and a teacher should know what to skip if there is not enough time to cover everything.

Regarding activities, the mentor stated this is the biggest section that takes up the most time. Therefore, a teacher should plan to utilize different activities to describe what is being taught in the lesson. Using diverse teaching and learning activities, a teacher can attain a wide variety of learning styles while ensuring activities are interactive, fun, and applicable to a real-world situation where possible. Finally, a teacher must consider tools to check for understanding while planning for the classroom. Machado and Helen (2010) affirmed that this lesson section is significant for learners and crucial for any teacher (65). This part of lesson planning teaches the tutor to gauge what learners will take away from the lesson and the amount they can retain. Therefore, a teacher should include formal or informal assessments under this section; for instance, class discussions, asking a series of questions, or having learners work on short group projects. However, any method to gauge the learners’ understanding of a specific lesson is valuable. Generally, planning is a vital tool and a part of teaching that ensures successful learning.
