Persuasive Essay – Abortion

Persuasive Essay – Abortion

It is crucial to understand that unsafe abortion is a leading cause of maternal mortality globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that a third of pregnancies culminate in abortions. Almost half of these abortions are unsafe and occur in developing countries (WHO, 2021). Moreover, over 10% of maternal mortalities are related to unsafe abortion procedures. It is against this backdrop that this paper is written. Access to legally secure abortion and comprehensive post-abortion care is crucial to attaining the highest level possible of reproductive health. It is, therefore, paramount to protect the health and human rights of women and girls through safe abortion.

The ideal audience for this essay is adolescents and young women. They have the right to information and means to freely decide the timing and number of children to achieve the highest reproductive and sexual health level. A friendly but professional approach is the best way to address the issue because abortion is an emotive subject that attracts stigma from society. As a result, in the event of unwanted pregnancies, young women resort to unsafe abortion when they do not have information and access to safe abortion.

What Is Important?

First, it is vital that they understand various definitions related to abortion. Abortion is the intentional termination of pregnancy (Bachiochi, 2011).  Safe abortion occurs when the method used is WHO-recommended, appropriate for pregnancy duration, and is performed by an individual with the necessary skills within a setting that meets the required medical standards. Unsafe abortions occur within inappropriate circumstances and by individuals deficient in the skills necessary.

Secondly, they need to be aware of what entails safe methods and unsafe procedures. The high incidence of unsafe abortion is propelled by low community awareness, restricted abortion laws, poor social support, and poor health service quality, especially in developing countries (Gebremedhin et al., 2018). Safe abortion methods include the use of tablets (pharmacological abortion), dilation and curettage, and manual vacuum aspiration. MVA and D&C are simple procedures that can be performed in an outpatient department. Unsafe abortion methods include inserting substances or objects into the uterine cavity (traditional concoctions or catheters), ingestion of harmful substances, external force application, and incorrectly performed dilation & curettage, and manual vacuum aspiration (by unskilled personnel).

Moreover, awareness of the consequences and complications of unsafe abortion is essential to deter young women from unsafe practices. Unsafe abortion morbidities can be immediate or long-term. Immediate consequences include sepsis (serious infection of reproductive organs) and severe anemia or death.  Long-term complications include disabilities and infertility. These health risks affect a woman’s mental and physical health throughout life.

Lastly, there are negative financial impacts for them and communities at large. The cost of hospitalizations secondary to unsafe abortions can be an added drain on the already socio-economically disadvantaged persons. Strategies to prevent unsafe abortion practices include increasing accessibility to and availability of contraceptives, comprehensive sexuality counseling and education, and advocacy (Atuhaire, 2019).

Conclusion

Morbidity and mortality due to unsafe abortion can be prevented. The provision of legally safe abortion care can protect women and girls. Adolescents and young women will resort to the use of clandestine and unsafe abortion methods whose implications and complications can be devastating or cataclysmal. Awareness, availability, and accessibility of youth-friendly health services can reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with unsafe abortions.
