Personality and Culture

Personality and Culture

Ethnography is the study of people’s culture, customs, and traditions. I have been interested in ethnography, especially since I am very interested in the Native Americans. I have always wanted to study their culture and worldview to understand some of their practices. To me, the Native Americans are an exciting group. Therefore, with knowledge of ethnography, I can study more about them to understand them better. Learning about another culture makes me more interested because their ideas, beliefs, and practices are unique. It is similar to making an adventurous journey into a community’s culture.

Stereotypes are ideas other groups have about a given culture; in many cases, they use them to generalize to the entire group (Olson, Favero, & Hergenhahn, 2019). For instance, the stereotype that the Chinese know mathematics. This is a stereotype because people generalize this perception about this group. Stereotypes do not have substance since, in many cases, they have formed ideas that are not scientific. Also, stereotypes have no basis because they are sometimes used to discriminate against another group.

Further, poor people do not have personalities that are different from the rich. Within the rich and the poor population, there are diverse personalities, and in some cases, personalities are similar. This reasoning is based on the understanding that personalities develop due to environmental factors, experiences, interactions with people, and even ideas borrowed from literature materials (Olson, Favero, & Hergenhahn, 2019). Therefore, there are philanthropic people among the poor and charitable individuals among the affluent population. Lastly, my culture has played a significant role in my personal development because my culture influences some of my ideas and philosophies. For instance, in my culture, kindness should consistently be demonstrated through how someone talks or through sharing with friends. Therefore, I consider kindness an important trait, and I always portray it.
