Emotional intelligence is essential in leadership because it increases a leader’s accountability and promotes good communication leading to trusting relationships because a leader can process their emotions in a way that enables them to handle challenges effectively. High emotional intelligence also enables leaders to better perceive their feelings and their colleagues’ thoughts and feelings, thus fostering a good relationship between leaders and followers. Emotional intelligence strengthens leadership skills by enabling a leader to effectively control their emotions when dealing with various situations and give space for everybody to give feedback when making decisions, thus promoting teamwork. The five components of emotional intelligence are also vital in developing leadership skills. The components include self-management, self-awareness, relationship management, and social awareness. Self-awareness includes understanding one’s weaknesses and strengths. It enables leaders to identify the skills they need to develop to lead effectively and control their emotions when making decisions. Self-management includes the ability to manage emotions during challenging times. It enables leaders to develop leadership skills by collaborating to address difficult situations. Social awareness includes being informed about one’s environment. Social awareness helps leaders develop leadership skills by enlightening them about the kind of people they are leading and their needs. It also enables the leader to adapt to their environment by acquiring and developing the skills needed to lead in a specific environment. Relationship management includes mentoring, resolving conflict, and coaching followers. Relationship management helps a leader develop the skills and abilities needed to maintain a good relationship with the followers, such as conflict management and communication skills. I have average emotional intelligence, so I need to focus on improving to become a better leader. The emotional intelligence concept can help me improve my communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. I also need to understand and manage my emotions effectively because it increases leadership effectiveness by preventing biased decisions and enabling the leader to accept the feedback and ideas provided by their followers. Section Two: Personal Leadership Assessment

One of the leadership strategies that can be used for managing stressful situations is identifying stressor reactions. Knipe & Rasuli (2018) state that the main stressor reactions include fight, flight, and freeze. Fight includes anger and aggression that may lead to poor communication and hostility towards the people around. Flight includes avoiding confrontation and may leave a person depleted, drained, and disinterested in their work. Freeze includes the lack of response, especially when someone is overwhelmed. Leaders can manage stressful situations by using the most effective response based on the situation. For example, when there is resistance to change, a leader may use fight response and pressure the followers to accept the change. The second leadership strategy is creating space and time to recharge. Leaders may acknowledge their stress levels and take time to think about what they should do. A leader may also talk to other leaders, friends, and colleagues to get ideas on addressing stressful situations. The third leadership strategy is cultivating psychological safety. Leaders can deal with stressful situations by being approachable to encourage followers to provide ideas on how to deal with a situation. It is also important for a leader to be comfortable having tough conversations. The fourth strategy is understanding and recognizing the emotional burden caused by stress and appropriate responses during stressful situations.

I was appointed as the leader of all interns in the organization during my internship. I experienced a stressful situation when one of the interns stole two company laptops and three tablets. When conducting a random audit, the manager realized the missing items and called a staff meeting where all employees were informed about the issue and requested not to leave the company’s premises until the person responsible was identified. Fortunately, the building security officer had seen the intern walking out of the building with a bag pack, which was unusual because the intern was a lady who often carried a handbag when coming to work. I was responsible for talking to the intern and getting information about where the items were because they contained sensitive company information. The situation was stressful because the intern did not want to talk, and the manager pressured me to get a response. I handled the situation by requesting a colleague to help me talk to the intern until she opened up. Although the action was effective, I could have better managed my reaction to the situation by using empathy to create a conducive environment for the intern to speak up instead of humiliating her by engaging other employees. This new insight might influence my leadership development by impacting how I approach my colleagues when dealing with a stressful situation.

Section Three: Personal Leadership Brand Statement

According to Spall & Schmidt (2019), a personal brand extends beyond skills and competencies, openness, and spirituality; it means access to one’s life through living life based on a creative viewpoint and creative work. Leaders with a good personal brand create better connections between consumers and companies, employees and companies, and promote the position and development of the organization. My leadership brand statement will be: “My leadership brand is responsibility, accountability, and creativity so that I can create a productive team and promote teamwork to meet the organization’s objective to deliver financial outcomes and high-quality patient care.” The personal brand statement reflects my personality, which is being an extrovert. I look for opportunities to interact with others and be sociable, thus promoting teamwork. The brand statement also reflects my strengths, including good communication, conflict management, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. The statement additionally capitalizes on my emotional intelligence by enabling me to empathize with my followers and colleagues.

Section Four: Personal Leadership Model

Leadership is vital in promoting teamwork and creating effective teams (Ceil, 2016). One of the leadership strategies to guide highly effective teams is building a diverse team. According to Bernhard et al. (2020), diversity promotes innovation by facilitating the exchange of different ideas, viewpoints, and experiences. Therefore, leaders should promote diversity by bringing together people from different backgrounds and creating a diversity and inclusion policy to ensure everyone is comfortable. The second strategy is defining and communicating the organization’s vision. A clear vision motivates team members to work hard and gives them an idea of what the organization expects, thus promoting team effectiveness. The third strategy is investing in employee training and development. Training is essential in equipping teams with the knowledge and skills required to complete their tasks effectively, leading to team effectiveness. Training and development are also essential in motivating employees and creating a sense of belonging, thus increasing productivity and contributing to team effectiveness. Leaders should also embrace employee recognition to encourage employees to meet the organization’s expectations and achieve their personal and organizational goals leading to increased commitment linked to team effectiveness.

The financial forecasts might influence my leadership approach by setting the priorities I need to focus on. For example, one of the organization’s focus is to increase profitability and revenue. Therefore, I need to use a leadership approach that promotes employee productivity and commitment to meeting the organization’s expectations. I also need to use a leadership approach that promotes innovation to attract more clients and gain a competitive advantage, thus increasing profitability and revenue. The second financial forecast is reducing operating costs. I need to use a leadership approach that prevents employee turnover to prevent the costs associated with hiring and training new employees. Servant leadership is the most effective approach because it promotes teamwork, increasing productivity and team effectiveness. The leadership approach reflects Mayo Clinic’s mission, values, and professional and personal ethics. For instance, servant leadership reflects Mayo Clinic’s mission of promoting health and inspiring hope through research, education, and clinical practice because a servant leader can guide the employees on what they are expected to do. Servant leadership also promotes Mayo Clinic’s teamwork, compassion, and innovation values because it facilitates teamwork and the exchange of ideas that can be applied to meet the organization’s goals. Servant leadership reflects personal and professional ethics related to accountability and using authority to meet the organization’s goals. Servant leadership reflects my professional ethics as a healthcare provider by ensuring that I serve my patients well and offer the best care while ensuring that the organization’s and patients” needs are met. Servant leadership also facilitates the development of trust, thus promoting quality patient care and collaboration among healthcare providers to create and implement innovative ideas that promote positive patient outcomes.
