I have realized that being a nurse leader places one in a position in which they are responsible for ensuring patient safety and quality care, as well as the well-being of other nurses. I conducted a personal leadership assessment based on self-assessment, concept application, and Quality Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) principles to identify my personal leadership style(s), theories, and skills that may positively and/or negatively affect patient outcomes.

Self-Assessment Strengths and Weaknesses

The self-assessment highlighted my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. My top strengths include being highly self-aware, communicating clearly, working well with groups, being adaptable, learning fast, being driven by the will to achieve, and being a hard worker. These strengths align and can translate to leadership skills and competencies, including self-awareness, communication, collaboration, goal-driven, adaptability and flexibility, and goal-setting and achievement. These strengths are what keeps pushing me toward becoming a better leader. On the other hand, the self-assessment exercise helped me identify some of my weaknesses as a leader, including the fact that I get too committed to a role or a process and am a perfectionist. This means I take a lot of time working on a single element of a process or reviewing an entire process to ensure it works perfectly. Additionally, although I work well with groups, I find myself micromanaging my team members on the role I have delegated to them. Micromanaging others has sometimes created issues with my team.

Leadership Theory

My main leadership theory and style of leadership is based on the adaptive leadership theory. The adaptive leadership style aligns with the leadership strengths and weaknesses I identified in the self-assessment section. I am a self-aware leader who communicates clearly, works well with groups, is adaptable, learns fast, is goal-oriented, and is a hard worker. However, I have realized I tend to be a perfectionist who sometimes micromanages others. Recent evidence developed during and after the post-COVID-19 pandemic shows that healthcare settings are facing new and complex challenges that force the need for new and better leadership competencies to help them navigate the complex and challenging issues of the current and future healthcare systems (Morse & Warshawsky, 2021).

The adaptive leadership style is suitable as it can help me grow on my strengths while improving on my weaknesses. For instance, as a self-aware leader, the adaptive leadership style helps me appreciate and manage my weaknesses by leveraging my strengths to adapt to various situations within the workplace. This also aligns with my adaptability strength, a core principle of adaptive leadership theory. In my case, the adaptive leadership style combined with my natural ability to adapt make my approach to leadership best suited for the changing nursing landscape and healthcare settings filled with uncertainties. As leadership from an adaptive leadership perspective is all about shared leadership, creating strong teams, considering others’ views, and promoting team collaboration and creativity (Ali et al., 2020), employing the adaptive leadership style can help me to utilize my communication, group collaboration, and fast learning strengths to overcome my weaknesses related to perfectionism and micromanaging others.

Quality Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Principles

I intend to align my leadership style with the QSEN principles and utilize the QSEN competencies to guide all aspects of my role as a nurse leader, including improving on my strengths and weaknesses. The two QSEN principles that align with my strengths as a leader and that can help me improve on my weaknesses are the principle of teamwork and collaboration and the principle of quality improvement. The principle of teamwork and collaboration aligns with all my strengths, especially communication and collaborative skills, which are necessary to ensure effective teamwork. The principle of quality improvement aligns with all of my strengths and can help me improve on my weaknesses in a number of ways. Perfectionism and micromanaging others are my major weaknesses. The principle helps me understand that quality improvement is a continuous process requiring independent input from all team members. Therefore, I understand that perfection is not achievable at once, and if it is to be achieved, I must allow each individual to whom I delegate roles to work independently, compare views, and allow workflow efficiency rather than micromanage them.

Comparing and Contrasting Leadership and Management

In most cases, leadership and management are used interchangeably. In comparison, leadership and management both focus on ensuring the organization is able to achieve its goals. However, in contrast, leadership and management differ in many ways. For instance, leadership focuses on the people, while management focuses on the organization. Leadership also focuses on motivating and inspiring the employees within a facility towards a shared goal while promoting creativity and managing change. On the other hand, management focuses on results from utilized resources and planning for resource utilization. While leadership utilizes a more collaborative approach, management focuses more on delegation and expecting results.

Suggestion of Week 1 Concept in the Workplace

The concept from Week 1 that I will apply in the workplace is time management. As perfectionism is one of my identified weaknesses, setting strict timelines will help me appreciate what I have achieved within the set time. In this case, I will utilize the time management concept to set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART), thus allowing me to prioritize tasks and overcome the pressure to achieve perfection on one task. Additionally, micromanagement leads to a loss of time. I will employ the time management concept to set deadlines, which will force me to delegate tasks to the team and focus on the quality of results achieved within the deadline rather than on how they carry out the tasks.
