Personal Ethical Philosophy about John Doe, who uses a Cloaking app that bypasses Copyright Books

Self-discipline and honesty are my personal ethical philosophy. Self-discipline is important for a person to have, showing that they are in control of their emotions and actions to do the right thing by avoiding anything negative that may tempt them to do something immoral or unethical. Honesty is a big thing for me because I can’t stand being lied to. The two theories that I agreed with the most were the natural law theory and Aristotle’s golden rule/ virtue ethics. According to the natural law theory, people are born with instincts within them that tell them something is moral or immoral, and any unnatural act is immoral (Rachels & Rachels, 2019). Aristotle focused on a person’s character and the virtuous qualities that they possess. Repetitive virtuous actions will become a habit and lead to the makings of a good person (Rachels & Rachels, 2019).

According to my theory, John Doe’s actions were immoral and unethical because he knowingly did something wrong, and he was trying to hide downloading the copyrighted textbooks by using a cloaking app. His actions were wrong and deceptive. As a nurse, he should have been held to a higher standard. As a nurse, he is obligated to have beneficence and justice by being fair and not doing any harm (Gaines, 2020). He was not showing qualities that show a person of good character. He ignored and disregarded his religious teachings by doing things known to be forbidden. If a person is loyal to their religion, they will accept what the leader of their church or religion says (Rachels & Rachels). The Bible says that people shouldn’t lie. Christians are more likely to be honest because of their faith (Xu et al., 2018). John Doe could have gotten some help according to the veil of ignorance since he is poor. If he had more self-discipline, he could have avoided acting immoral and unethical and could have looked into resources that could offer him assistance with things he needed so that he didn’t have to do bad things to save money. John Doe risked getting kicked out of school, jail time, or losing his nursing license.

The veil of ignorance deals with justice by being fair. It is a social contract that people shouldn’t know anything about their circumstances, but they will have knowledge of science and fairness. Under the veil of ignorance, everyone should have equal freedoms. All people should benefit equally. The poor or low-income should get help first to ensure their-wellbeing(D’Amico, 2019). Since John Doe is in the lower income, the veil of ignorance says people poor people should receive help. So, John Doe should be able to apply for some assistance so that he can get textbook assistance or help with other finances.

Some people believe that you can tell who a person is by what they do when no one is looking. Let’s look at the following case. John Doe, a nurse, has downloaded an application to her phone that allows him to download copyrighted textbooks for a nursing course (that Doe is going to take) without his Internet Service Provider knowing it. The application is called “Cloak,” as in a cloak of invisibility (a hooded coat one wears to make it so others cannot see you). The application disguises his phone and makes it so the information on it is inaccessible. John is aware that other people who are of lower socioeconomic status (like him) also use this software program for the same reason (and to save money). John Doe knows that his religion forbids him from using this application to download in this manner. John Doe is focused on his own economic situation and does not consider the publisher, author, and others involved in the books. Think about a course of social action; what social values should be used to address this moral issue and conflict.

Create a personal ethical philosophy and explain from which philosophy or philosophies (it must include at least one of the following: virtue ethics, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, or social contract ethics) you created it and why the contents are important and meaningful for you. List its precepts.

Take your personal ethical philosophy statement and use it to work through John Doe’s case. What is moral and immoral per your theory?
How would the veil of ignorance or a different theory of justice address John Doe’s case?
