Peer Responses – Language and Cognition

Response 1

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your post. The ideas on language and power in the workplace are constructive. The distinction between ‘warm gentle language’ and ‘facts and competence’ demonstrates how language can either reduce or generate a threat response, especially in a traditional male order. It should be noted that stressing facts and directives in the e-mail correspondence may be regarded as unfriendly or insensitive and thus decrease the extent to which the recipient is ready to collaborate (Gagne et al., 2020). Using friendly and tolerant language makes communication more constructive, resulting in improved team dynamics.

It is relevant to the notions that older people who use “we” are seen as warmer than younger people who employ “I”. Here lies a potential approach to the enhancement of teamwork in organizations. In text communications, there is a possibility to change from individualistic to collective discourse, which will help to heal the generation gap. This concurs with the conclusion that when language is inclusive, it can change cognition and relationships within the workplace, emphasizing for importance of purposeful language selection to improve professional relations.

Response 2

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your post. It has been well described how language plays a role in improving communication in professional environments. The awareness that multiculturalism diminishes how the approach to communication is done emphasizes the role of cultural respect within the profession (Chau, 2020). In particular, written messages, particularly those conveyed by e-mail, are likely to cause misunderstanding because of the clash of politeness, assertiveness, and brevity. Acceptance of different modes of communication by employees also helps in enhancing the working relationships, hence minimizing conflicting situations.

This shows how perceptions shift as one moves within different cultures and why culture should always be a consideration in business. According to Al Shamsi et al. (2020), there will always be a way of managing barriers and ensuring that there are no misunderstandings that are likely to stem from the use of texts in communication, especially if one uses simple language devoid of technical terms. As a rule, multicultural teams derive benefit from the situation when the message of the team leader is unambiguous and members of the team feel engaged. Such ideas emphasize the recognition of the fact that intercultural communication in workplaces involves acceptance and valuing of cultural realities.

Question

PROMPT: Over the years, psychologists have proposed a number of different theories to describe the interactions between language and other types of cognition. This week’s readings expose you to a number of these theories. Some theories suggest that language shapes the way we think about things. Others suggest that individuals are able to change their thought patterns by learning different languages. Consider the influence of language on human cognition in professional settings by discussing how language promotes or limits communication between people. Finally, discuss how cognition could be improved or problems could be solved by examining language.
