Hello,

This is a great post. The comparison you have done between BP and Harley-Davidson’s sustainability reporting on sustainability reporting frameworks is quite insightful. I agree with you that having a clear structure on how to set goals and pursue them makes it easier for companies to meet sustainability obligations (Baumüller & Sopp, 2021). For instance, setting timelines to achieve by 2025 and 2030 is one way to encourage accountability in pursuing the goals. It is intriguing that Harley Davidson’s approach seems to be less accessible due to the lack of a designated progress section: Peer Responses.

I cannot dispute any further that failure to set clear targets makes it difficult to monitor the steps made in the actual progress. To add on, it would be valuable to identify how each of the frameworks influenced your evaluation of the sustainability reports. On my end, I believe that companies that incorporate sustainability in their strategy instead of their reporting are likely to achieve more on matters of sustainability. Further, they can easily integrate their results into the sustainability frameworks.

Hello,

Great work with your post. It is informative considering the breakdown adopted in reviewing the frameworks used by TenTree and URBN corporations. I concur with you that the climate action adopted by TenTree of planting one billion trees by the year 2030 is a good sustainability goal. Further, the goal can be integrated into all forms of sustainability reporting frameworks and be measured accurately.

As a result, it would be easier to report the performance of the company. It is concerning that the same is not observed with URBN’s reporting structure. I agree that it is difficult to assess the company’s commitment to attaining sustainability goals without a consistent progress indicator (Wahlen et al, 2013).

The fact that they only state that they are on track to achieve the goals is not enough. As such, it is important to change this to measurable goals that every stakeholder will be satisfied with.

When looking at BP’s data and progress, it is fairly easy to identify if they are having positive progress in reaching their goals or if they are experiencing the opposite. Under the first five goals, they provide a visual representation of the past 5 years and the progress they have made in reaching these goals. They also depict a 2025 target and a 2030 aim. In the progress area, they depict what they have been doing and what they have changed to be able to continue their positive outcomes.

I would say that the progress is measured in a relative timeframe because it is remeasured after each year for each of the goals and the company makes the appropriate adjustments to their plans if need be. They also go into detail with each goal and the progress they have made in reaching them. For each section of goals, they do provide a summary page that summarizes their 2023 progress in reaching the specific goals in the section. Overall, I think BP does a good job with providing data and the progress they are making towards reaching their goals.

Looking at Harley Davidsons data and progress compared to BP, BP is definitely easier to read. Harley Davidson has a section that provides its performance data. This entails employee/promotion demographics, operational energy use, Scope 1 & 2 CO2 emissions, and Scope 3 emissions. They provide data from 2018-2023.

It’s hard to determine if the data is making any progress with their goals because they do not have a designated section that talks about the company’s progress. With a progress area not clearly depicted, it is more difficult to correctly analyze if the company is making the appropriate progress towards their goals. At the same time, they do not have a clear section that states their goals and what they plan on doing to achieve these goals. This makes it more difficult to understand the data they have in their report because they don’t indicate what they are doing to improve their data.

With this information, BP has a higher rating than Harley Davidson in this matter due to the fact that Harley Davidson portrays this information in a poor manner. After looking at these two companies’ reports, I have developed an understanding of how a company can effectively portray that they are actually taking action in achieving a better sustainability report.

There are some areas that I do think I will need to develop my knowledge and that is regarding the company’s ability in following the frameworks they have set in place. By bettering my knowledge, I will be able to better understand why the company has the goals they set in place and the reason behind the course of action they are taking.

TenTree has a page called “Progress Against Our Targets” (Page 37), so it was easy to find. They have a percentage completed toward their goals. Throughout the pages, there are more detailed goals, such as the goal of planting 1 billion trees by 2030. The progress toward that goal was on page 23 and stated, “In 2023, we surpassed 100 million trees planted and supported some of our most exciting projects yet.”

Each section had more data that went into detail of the goals. I think the goals are challenging because of how ambitious TenTree is in their commitment to sustainability. I love the sound of their goals, but planting 1 billion trees by 2030 would take a massive effort by all involved.

URBN had multiple pages with the goals and their status. The status only stated “On track, Achieved, and Continuing to Research Solutions.” They were easy to find, but I don’t really see where they have provided how much is completed against their goal on all items.

They have notes on the progress, and some have a percentage completed toward the goal, but some were missing the notes and percentages. Their goals do not seem as challenging as TenTree’s. For example, “Increase utilization of 3D visualization” is aimed at reducing waste. That seems simple and easily attained.
