Peer Response-Telemedicine in Healthcare

Thank you for your post. I agree with you. Telemedicine is a healthcare technology that has developed due to external pressures and technological advancements and has improved efficiency and convenience in healthcare delivery. The adoption of telemedicine in nursing care delivery is facing certain challenges, such as an uncertain regulatory environment, limited user knowledge of the technologies used, as well as concerns over user privacy (Khemapech et al., 2019). However, the benefits of the use of telemedicine outweigh any concerns and are a motivation towards finding solutions to such challenges and concerns.

Telemedicine is proving to be a solution to all factors impacting healthcare utilization and patient health outcomes, including timely access to healthcare services and costs of care. The convenience of delivering healthcare services to patients in the comfort of their homes contributes to the reduced costs of care. Using telemedicine means that the need to travel to the hospital is eliminated, eliminating transport-related care costs. Regarding the convenience and comfort aspects of telemedicine, patients have unlimited access to nurses and other healthcare providers whenever needed, regardless of their geographical location. In fact, the use of telemedicine has proved to be a sustainable solution to overcome geographical and cultural barriers, especially in the delivery of healthcare to rural and remote places (Ellis & Russell, 2019). The convenience of healthcare delivery and access also enables healthcare providers to conduct timely disease assessments for better treatment planning with the potential to improve patient and disease outcomes. Additionally, telemedicine has the potential to establish personal patient-provider relationships that can improve the experiences of the patient and their family, especially in the management of chronic diseases or unintended disease outcomes.

Question

The modern healthcare system faces major transformations, including promoting telemedicine prominence. Telemedicine involves delivering healthcare services through electronic information and technology devices such as smartphones, computers, cameras, satellites, and videoconferencing. It is a low-resource modality that facilitates convenience and efficiency in the healthcare system. Extensive research shows that external pressures and technological advancements have driven telemedicine into medical reality forefront. While the benefits of telemedicine are numerous, there are still existing challenges facing the trend.

According to research, physicians have largely utilized telemedicine for many years. As a result, telemedicine has demonstrated its potential in advanced nurse practice in various dimensions, such as efficiency, economy, and quality of care. Telemedicine enables clinicians to monitor patient health after discharge or manage chronic ailments at home (Frey & Chiu, 2021). In addition, self-measurement instruments can help monitor vital signs like high blood pressure remotely since alarms can notify healthcare providers when patients require assistance at home. Healthcare providers can also share patient data with specialists in real time, thus connecting patients to quality care worldwide. Using videoconferencing, nurses can monitor injuries during recovery.

On the contrary, telemedicine faces challenges, including regulations during implementation. Healthcare professionals encounter hurdles when seeking to integrate telemedicine into their practice. The state regulations and laws governing the healthcare providers’ practice and insurance reimbursement rules usually frustrate telemedicine utilization in some areas (Balestra, 2018). Further, some patients experience barriers to health care since not everyone accesses the telenursing components. Also, some visits require in-person, and videoconferencing cannot facilitate access to diagnostic tactics.

Nurses play a critical role in telemedicine, and healthcare organizations should actively engage them with interdisciplinary teams to develop practical procedures and policies that integrate telemedicine into daily practice. They should also dedicate appropriate space for telemedicine equipment for efficiency. Finally, health providers should understand the laws and regulations that impact their practices to avoid obstacles they encounter.
