Peer Response – Empowering Students to Own the Assessment Process

Responding to Rachel

Hello Rachel,

I would like to thank you for a powerful discussion post. I agree with your opinion that reflection is part of learning. In addition, students reflect through writing. Checklists can be used to assess whether certain skills, behaviors, or attitudes are demonstrated after successfully learning. Additionally, teachers can use them as assessment tools to measure what the class has understood. They can also enter students’ information into a single document, which can be used to reflect on learners’ progress. To add to your response to the 10-minute discussion, the 10-minute peer feedback system allows students to share ideas and thoughts with fellow students. Spencer (2020) asserts that students engage in a process that measures their strengths and areas of improvement. After this process, every group returned to their project to review the feedback they received in a 10-minute discussion.

 Responding to Addie

Hi Addie,

I would like to congratulate you for a good response to the questions. Assessment helps improve creative work by guiding students to recognize their strengths as well as areas of improvement, hence guiding them to revise their work (Lemov, 2021). Additionally, the process helps students get feedback that is specific, constructive, and timely. When students engage in reflection, I believe they can do so through writing. They can reflect on their projects, grades, actions, and reactions by comparing what they have scored against what they expected to score. By noting down their expectations, students are able to work towards achieving their goals in learning. Checklists can be used to assess whether certain skills, behaviors, or attitudes are demonstrated after successfully learning (Spencer, 2020). Additionally, teachers can use them as assessment tools to measure what the class has understood. Students can enter their information into one document and then reflect on their progress.

Peer Response – Empowering Students to Own the Assessment Process

Rachel

How can students engage in self-reflection?

They can reflect on their learning process. Also, they can reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of products.

How can checklists be used as a diagnostic tool?

Students can use checklists before, during, and after the projects. They can also enter all off their information into a portfolio and be then able to reflect on their progress.

What is the 10-minute peer feedback system, and how does it work?

The 10 minute peer feedback system allows a student to share their work or ideas while the other student listens. Then it moves to active questions and feedback.

Addie

Hey Rachel, great response! I really like the idea of the 10-minute feedback system. I think that it is a great way for students to engage in the activity and discussion and really think critically about the assignment. I put somewhat of the same answers to the first questions. I plan to use checklists a lot in my classroom. They are very organized and probably my favorite strategy to use to keep track of everything. I plan to implement self-reflection in my classroom because it is so important that students learn to check back after themselves. As the video said, students will not always have teachers to check their work for them, so it is important that students learn at an early age to check their work and make sure everything is correct and finished.

How does assessment help in improving creative work?

  • It helps you by refining your process and improving your product.
  1. How can students engage in self-reflection?
  • Students can engage in self-reflection by reflecting on the learning process. They can also focus on their strengths and weaknesses of the products.
  1. How can checklists be used as a diagnostic tool?
  • Checklists can be use before, during, and after specific tasks. This can be used a diagnostic tool because it helps the students make sure they checked everything off of their list and do it in a timely manner. It also helps with applying knowledge of what they know, what they need to know, and what they will learn.

List of self-assessing methods:

  • checklists
  • set goals
  • self-assessing rubric
  • 10 minute peer assessment
  • 3-2-1 structure

I love the self-reflection learning processes for students. It is important for teachers to self-reflect how they gave the lesson and students can do the same for their progress. I am a firm believer in checklists and never thought about students being able to use them as well. Great response.
