Old Comedy and New Comedy

Old Comedy and New Comedy

Compare and contrast Old Comedy and New Comedy. Describe characteristics of each. Give examples Old and New Comedy.

Comedies are performed or written to draw excitement from the audience or readers. Comedy is characterized into two categories: Old Comedy and New Comedy. These types of comedies do not imply that Old Comedy isn’t present in current times. A couple of factors are considered when categorizing comedies between old and new comedies (Martin & Jacobus, 2019).

The first factor considered is a comedy’s phallic nature. Old Comedy involves individual attacks of a sexual nature. Moreover, these comedies involve broad humor surrounding an individual’s sexual nature. On the other hand, New Comedy is not phallic but is subtle and barely recognizes an individual’s sexual nature. This factor clearly differentiates between the two types of comedies.

The next factor is the characteristics of a society within a comedy. New Comedy focuses on the manners and social behaviors within society. This type of Comedy concentrates on the manners present within society and doesn’t focus on an individual. On the other hand, Old Comedy is less subtle as it attacks individuals and pays no mind to the manners within a society.

The other factor is the presence of Type Characters. New Comedy includes characters such as blocking characters and other stereotypes. Moreover, they play an essential role in conveying the behaviors of a society. In contrast, Old Comedy does not focus on type characters as they focus on individuals.

The final factor is the presence of make-believe violence. Old Comedy is associated with make-believe violence with the use of slapstick. Make-believe violence makes the Comedy more exciting, and the performers do not get injured in the process. The violence emphasizes the lack of subtlety, contrary to New Comedy, which is subtle. An example of Old Comedy is “Horrible Bosses,” and an example of New Comedy is “Friends.” In conclusion, it is clear that classifying Comedy based on the factors listed makes it easy for readers and audiences to differentiate between the two types of Comedy.
