Observation of Evidence-Based Practice

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a method of providing healthcare that makes use of the most recent research to enhance patient safety and healthcare while lowering costs and variation in medical outcomes (What Is Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing?-UMFK, 2020).

In the last few decades, EBP has transformed the healthcare system. Healthcare professionals combine the best available data with their clinical knowledge, the patient’s values, and their preferences to choose the optimal course of therapy. EBP keeps the practice updated and relevant, and it also increases the confidence of healthcare professionals in decision-making. EBP also played a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, as well as the establishment of COVID-19 protocols.

Suggestions for practice settings:

If we talk about personal experience, then there are a few suggestions that I would like to make that can be beneficial to healthcare organizations and healthcare professionals. It is crucial for healthcare professionals like doctors and nurses to have access to accurate, relevant, and up-to-date information so adoption of EBP becomes easy. Healthcare organizations must facilitate their staff in finding time to read research reports and articles. Most of the staff, like nurses, have inadequate knowledge of research and statistical terms. This barrier can be removed by providing proper training. In many healthcare organizations, there are insufficient resources, which are the main hurdles in implementing EBP, so equipment and materials must be provided by the organization. Research findings and research data are crucial for implementing EBP, so the final suggestion is to provide training regarding research and how to understand research findings.

EBP implementation in practice should be methodical and involve organizational resolve, interdisciplinary cooperation, and personal dedication. For nurses, doctors, and healthcare institutions, it can be a win-win situation if EBP is implemented. (Shayan, Kiwanuka, & Nakaye, 2019).
