Nutrition and Exercise Reflection

Nutrition and Exercise Reflection

Introduction

Nutrition and exercise are lifestyle factors essential in maintaining good health by reducing the risk of developing chronic diseases and disorders. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer, obesity, and stroke, the most common health conditions, are associated with poor diet and poor lifestyle modification factors such as insufficient physical exercise (Ng et al., 2020). However, eating healthy foods and getting adequate exercise will help prevent such chronic illnesses. Therefore, nutrition and exercise play a vital role in the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention and preventative treatment of various chronic diseases and disorders.

Primary Prevention of Diseases and Disorders

In the nutrition context, primary prevention seeks to prevent risk factors in the overall population, such as distributing dietary guidelines to increase nutritional awareness and facilitate behaviour modification. The dietary guidelines’ goal is to advise what to eat and drink to establish a balanced diet that can enhance healthy development, prevent nutrition-associated chronic diseases and meet nutrient demands. The primary dietary guidelines involve the intake of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, fibre, proteins, and monosaturated fats (Kalantar-Zadeh & Moore, 2020). In primary prevention, physical exercise, for example, in conditions such as heart disease, decreases the heart rate and the systolic heart rate. In addition, education programs about regular exercise will prevent chronic diseases.

Secondary Prevention of Diseases and Disorders

Secondary prevention identifies people at risk of disease through screening and various risk assessment forms. The establishment of nutrition programs for patients helps prevent chronic diseases. Besides, it can also be achieved by administering dietary supplements, rehydration, dietetic services, or added nutrition support to populations at risk of various diseases. Physical exercise helps in the secondary prevention of disorders such as cardiovascular diseases by decreasing the impact of the disorders, slowing their progress, and controlling their recurrence (Karunathilake & Ganegoda, 2018).

Tertiary Prevention of Diseases and Disorders

Nutrition promotes tertiary prevention of diseases by establishing dietary support groups that help individuals express their living strategies. Furthermore, establishing nutritional follow-up care and nutrition rehabilitation resources prevents complications or adverse effects in patients with chronic diseases. The impact of physical exercise in tertiary prevention is linked to a decrease in sedimentary lifestyles to help in the reduction of the risks of worsening or recurrence of the diseases (Kalantar-Zadeh & Moore, 2020). In addition, it also plays a role in reducing co-morbidities associated with chronic illnesses. Lastly, it also increases the physical capabilities and improves the quality of life in the affected patients.

Conclusion

In conclusion, nutrition and exercise play an important role in health. A healthy diet and routine physical activity will promote the overall well-being of an individual. They help prevent weight gain, promote energy levels and mood, strengthen joints, muscles, and bones, and decrease the risk of chronic illnesses such as hypertension, stroke, cancers, heart diseases, and diabetes. Besides, there is a link between nutrition and exercise because they impact each other positively or negatively. Accordingly, good nutrition gives an individual more energy and encourages adequate physical exercise. Negatively, poor nutrition causes inadequate physical exercise or can eliminate it. On the one hand, primary prevention of diseases involves preventing risky behaviours. On the other, secondary prevention involves identification through risk assessment and screening of the population at risk, and tertiary prevention involves decreasing the disease effects established in a patient.
