Nursing Shortage
Why is understanding the health care system at the local level important to consider when planning an EBP implementation? Conduct research and solicit anecdotal evidence from your course preceptor that you will take into consideration for your own change project.
An understanding of the healthcare system at the local level is important when planning to implement evidence-based practice. Information obtained at the local level provides insight into the types of resources available. Evidence-based practice (EBP) involves using the best scientific findings obtained from research (Horntvedt et al., 2018). Healthcare providers and financial support are required to implement EBP. The availability of adequate healthcare providers such as nurses, pharmacists, and physicians at the local healthcare system level can help in the implementation of the EBP.
Understanding the healthcare system at the local level provides information on the organizational culture and the needs of the community. An organizational culture that supports research and EBP through established policies and adequate funding is likely to facilitate the implementation process (Ridgely et al., 2020). Furthermore, the culture and needs of the community help to identify the main area of focus when implementing the EBP. The needs of the community differ from diabetic complications and proper antibiotic use to other chronic conditions (Ridgely et al., 2020). Therefore, an understanding of healthcare at the local level facilitates the identification of a change that will adequately address the needs of the community.
A discussion with my preceptor enabled me to identify some considerations for my change project, the nursing shortage. Involving the local healthcare facilities and the community will enable me to identify the impact of the nursing shortage at this level. Permission will be sought from the hospital administration on each visit to the local facilities. The opinions of nurses on their satisfaction with their nurse-to-patient ratios will be sought. Furthermore, the impact of the nursing shortage on the staff will be sought. Some of the indicators that will be sought are the presence of burnout, stress, or recent incidences of quitting jobs due to dissatisfaction.
