Personal Values and Beliefs of Nursing

Nursing is deeply rooted in values such as compassion, respect, integrity, and accountability. These are values that inform the establishment and unmatched passion for health service delivery that considers overall human well-being in holistic terms inclusive of psychological and social well-being. Part of my principles and values includes the ability to follow cultural sensitivity while handling patients.

For example, respect for patient autonomy is a guiding principle in my practice. This includes patient-centered models, which embrace the creation of healthcare structures that embrace patients’ self-determination about their health (Olejarczyk & Young, 2024). My strong belief in the concept of lifelong learning also runs in my approach to evidence-based practice to ascertain that care is delivered based on the current best possible knowledge tailored toward the situation of an individual patient.

Assumptions about Nursing, Clients, and the World

Assumptions are important in the foundation of nursing practice. I assume that nursing is holistic, meaning it is not only concerned with physical care but also with emotional and spiritual well-being. I assume clients are active participants in their care and, therefore, capable of expressing their needs and preferences. Further, I see the world as a complex system where health inequities exist and, therefore, equitable and inclusive practices must be observed.

These assumptions shape my practice in a way that is patient-centered, embracing the uniqueness of each individual. For example, knowing that every client’s experiences are unique and shaped by cultural, socioeconomic, and environmental factors helps me to tailor interventions appropriately so that they align with the experiences and values of the client.

My philosophical beliefs align with constructivism, emphasizing the idea that knowledge is shaped by personal experiences and relationships. This perspective encourages reflective practice, allowing me to learn from each patient interaction (Alemdar & Aytaç, 2022). For instance, during patient education, I consider it essential to identify with the client’s view. Thus, making sure that not only is the information filtered to meet their cultural and educational needs but also that what is being passed to them makes some sense to them.

This works to build trust, create partnerships, and improve health, coming from the tenets of patient-centeredness. Furthermore, decision-making is also anchored on constructivism, where practice axioms are supported by research, professional judgment, and patient preferences. This mashing of theory and practice makes sure that care is effective and meaningful and, the requirements of various clients are met.

Concepts in Nursing Practice

In my daily practice, I engage with several core concepts, including patient-centered care, advocacy, evidence-based practice, collaboration, and cultural competence. Of these, patient-centered care has been given the most importance. This concept reflects an understanding of patient autonomy, dignity, and worth of patient-centered care in the general pursuit of the maximum health potential.

This approach is especially suitable to confront the problems of contemporary medicine, including inequality in the distribution of medical services and the quality of the latter (Engle et al., 2021). It enhances the likelihood of a patient-centered approach to the interventions, which, in the end, builds confidence within the patient and the caregivers.

Although advocacy and collaboration are also secondary conceptualizations, they assist in achieving the core objective intended to put patient-centered care into practice.

Additionally, this concept aligns with the metaparadigm of nursing, which emphasizes the integration of nursing actions (nursing), the individual (person), wellness (health), and the broader context of care (environment). By focusing on patient-centered care, I aim to create a framework that promotes holistic and effective nursing practice.

To create an effective nursing philosophy, it is important to identify personal values and beliefs as well as assumptions that one holds. Such elements define the nature of care and direct the ordering of ideas in the practice of nursing.
